Turning a point on a piece in the chuck is a good tip. You should also rotate the center in the tailstock and check in a few times if you want be really sure. Some times dust can get in the taper or the center may not be perfect.

Didn't know Edge did a test bar - very useful. May get me one sometime if not too costly.
