The first spacewalk, or extravehicular activity (EVA), was conducted by Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov on March 18, 1965. Leonov exited his spacecraft, Voskhod 2, and spent about 12 minutes outside, tethered by a 5-meter (16-foot) cable.
The mission wasn’t without challenges: Leonov’s spacesuit unexpectedly inflated in the vacuum of space, making it difficult for him to move and almost impossible to re-enter the spacecraft. He had to release some of the suit’s pressure manually to fit back into the airlock, a risky move that ultimately saved his life. Leonov’s spacewalk was a major milestone, marking humanity’s first venture outside a spacecraft and setting the stage for future EVAs.
