Loved this film, but I do prefer rear window in terms of Hitchcock. Although objectively this is his best film
ОтветитьWhen he runs down the stairs with that grin on his mouth it scared the hell out of me.
ОтветитьThis movie was ahead of its time, but man, did it just rock! It even can put the newer horror movies in the corner. I think my favorite part was right after the shower scene. It was still shocking and tense. Like being in a bad wreck and the reaction was up.
ОтветитьNorman Bates
Patrick Batesman
Batman
Amazing universe
one of my favourite classic horror movies by Alfred Hitchcock and incredible by universal and in 4K and great review as always Chris
Ответить10/10 PSYCHO is a masterpiece...
,but VERTIGO is 1% better!
The shower scene is the most scariest image that i've ever scene in any movie.
ОтветитьThis is an odd comparison but I'd like to see you review Soylent Green in the year 2022, since you mentioned imagination filling in the gaps of the violence
ОтветитьNot only is it the greatest horror movie of all time it's one of the greatest movies of all time.
ОтветитьI dont know why or how it took me forever watching this masterpiece but holy shit 👋🏼 it was crazy seeing the movie after going on the studio tour for so many years at ush .. next one on my list is the birds .
Ответить(10/8/21) I watched this on TV a few years ago. I bought the DVD today, and I intend to see it soon.
Like I said, I haven't seen it in a few years(around 3 to be exact). However, I can see the effect it still has.
Last December, I went to see family for Christmas. My Grandma/guardian and I were going to go to a motel afterwards to spend the night. My Grandma asked me beforehand if I wanted to take a shower there.
I responded, in fear: "A shower?...At the motel?....(breathing in fear) Nah...I'm good."
Later, when we were there, I had to use the bathroom in the middle of the night. I spent the entire time in there, looking around, looking at potential self-defense weapons, like shampoo.
I then thought to myself- "I know it's just a movie, but I hope a mentally unstable woman* doesn't come in here."
The on and off temperature was a part of this too, but I had a hard time sleeping that night.
I hadn't seen Psycho in a few years, and it still made me afraid of motel bathrooms.
*Okay, Norman did it, but you get my point.
Halloween Night 2021…. 61 yrs later… I finally watched this movie (or, 36 yrs later as thats only how old I am). Watched it with my newly wedded wife at home. One the most fun at-home movie watching experiences I can remember having in a long time.
Ответитьjust rewatched it for the first time as an adult (probably 15 years) and OMG what a RIDE. Loved this movie and was tense the whole time. I love the whole woman on the run, money theft component
ОтветитьI wish instead of the whole explanation for the doctor it was just the blanket scene
ОтветитьThe explanation scene must be put into 1960 context: nobody has ever witnessed something like Psycho that dealt with psychological analysis of a serial killer before, so that scene was put into the movie for a specific purpose: introducing the audience to the genre and profiling a serial killerr without making them too scared to watch something like that again. It's actually brilliant if you take this context into mind. Hitchcock knew he just invented a new horror genre that was so troubling for most.
ОтветитьI would imagine you watched the Bates Motel series…. If not you should. If so, what did you think?
ОтветитьThe book is far better. Hitchcock completely ruined it. I'm sure you already knew that. You didn't even mention the book. Phhh
ОтветитьNearly a third of the film is on Victim Marian Crane……..her dialogue & arc….particularly her internal dialogue is mirrored by Norman Bates arc & dialogue
ОтветитьChris Stuckmann and my fellow Psychodelics. I'm also an avid Hitchcock fan. And I've read most ot the comments, and noticed something missing. I managed to keep myself from knowing anything about Psycho until I saw it at the Carnegie Hall Cinema, NYC in the 1970s. I have always admired how AH manipulates an audience and I was thoroughly manipulated. I was literally terrified and on the edge of my seat for the entire film. As the years roll by and I finally get a VHS copy and later DVD, and watch it more and show it to friends, slowly it dawns on me that this film has many comic elements. Seeing the trailer in the 90s confirmed this suspicion. Nowadays I laugh out loud throughout the film (while simultaneously admiring it's power and remembering how I first reacted) So for me the psychiatrist ending is just more jokes. I also adore the total integration of soundtrack and image, one of Alfred's hallmarks. All the best to all of you JIM Oaxaca
ОтветитьHitchcock never made horror. He made suspense. In horror the motives are shown at the beginning (Frankenstein/Dracula), in suspense they're shown as late as possible.
ОтветитьI watched this for the first time last night - all I knew of it was the shower scene and I assumed that would be the last scene. When it happened only about halfway through, things suddenly got very interesting!
ОтветитьHey, I guess you're super busy now between kids and your own movie, but when are we getting some more pre-1970s reviews? 😉
ОтветитьI was a sheltered child, LOL! I'd never heard of Psycho or heard any reference to the infamous shower scene score. Of course, this was back in the late 1970s before VHS became common, and cable TV was just 36 channels including HBO and Showtime.
Anyway, I was flipping channels and stumbled onto Psycho just as Marion Crane has started her shower. I was intrigued, wondering what was happening as I could instantly sense something was different (besides being in black and white). I turned up the volume on the TV as it was quiet by my standards. Then the attack and the screeching crescendo and Marion's screams blasted out. My mother, who'd been all the way across the house, came dashing into the living room and shut the TV off before the scene was finished.
For years I didn't know what I'd just witnessed, LOL!
Psycho is the most realistic horror movie that it stands the test of time.
ОтветитьPsycho was the first movie that led me to old classics and i am really happy about it.
ОтветитьArguably the greatest horror movie ever made. It's either Psycho or The Exorcist. Then you have my personal favorite sci-fi horror, Aliens. Every one of these classics should be seen on Halloween
ОтветитьI went into this movie with very low expectations. I already knew about the twist ending and the shower scene. Furthermore I had scene plenty of modern and more violent horror movies before this. However, to my surprise, this movie STILL legitimately scared me! The scene with Norman’s mother’s voice in his head, the stairway jumpscare, and the scene with the mother’s skeleton were ALL legitimately spine chilling! The stairway jumpscare actually made me scream!
ОтветитьWhen Norman now dress as his mother goes to kill Lila after she finds “Mrs. Bates.” Is scary
ОтветитьDamn. Jamie Lee is literally the spitting image of her mom.
ОтветитьThis is my favourite movie of all the movies he's reviewed
ОтветитьThe movie that layed the groundwork for slashers and psychoanalysis... A crafting masterpiece for 1960.
ОтветитьThis film was so modern for it's time.
ОтветитьI just watched it and now I will watch other 2 parts as well
ОтветитьHitchcock was a brilliant director. The movie starts out in black & white and then he uses the zone system. The Weston brothers, Ansel Adams. It's not photoshop they knew how to develop film, and the optics. The final photo of Norman with the fly. Genius.
ОтветитьAmazing film with a realistic and disturbing atmosphere. Bates felt very believable.
ОтветитьAmazing film and my BIG mouth Dad told me the twist !!!!! So annoying
ОтветитьJust watched it for the first time it was pretty good
ОтветитьPsycho might not be the scariest horror film by today's standards. The Exorcist is probably the scariest. But Psycho is still the best and most important horror film of all time.
ОтветитьI’ve always preferred psychological horror/thriller over the supernatural because how demons are portrayed in film isn’t how demons work in real life at all (according to Abrahamic religions) so it’s so far removed from reality. The Exorcist is a great film but once again that’s not how demonic possession works in real life so it’s about as scary as a fantasy movie.
I’m always so disappointed when any horror media has a great premise & then it turns out “no it’s just a ghost/demon”.
Nice shirt there, Chris!
ОтветитьThis is a classic, something that can be re-watched over and over. The way Hitchcock manipulates the audience here is brilliant
ОтветитьI find it very strange that Chris’ parents-who wouldn’t let him watch “The Exorcist” as a child-had no problem with him watching “Psycho “ when he was only six or seven years old.
ОтветитьInterestingly enough, the psychiatrist who explains Norman Bates’ behavior at the end of the movie is played by Simon Oakland, who played newspaper boss Tony Vincenzo in the horror television show “Kolchak the Night Stalker”.
ОтветитьPsycho is one of the best Hitchcock murder mysteries! When I first saw the film I never caught on that Norman was the killer (till the end of course). What's not so plausible is the last scene where the police doctor manages to get an entire confession-and Norman's life story-all from Norman himself in just an hour or so! Not likely! I always liked how the film begins with it being Marion Crane's story, then after a half hour the film turns into Norman's story. Also the private detective that Norman kills was most likely an ex police officer, so for doing that, in reality, Norman would most likely be found dead in his cell. Interesting note: Anthony Perkins and Martin Balsam also appear together in Catch 22, with Perkins as the normal one, and Balsam playing the weirdo!
ОтветитьNorman Bates is enmeshed with his mother.
ОтветитьMy father told me the shower scene was shocked. Especially with a big name actress
ОтветитьMate....it's not Hitchcock, it's Robert Bloch, the author. This is one of the most loyal adaptations of a novel I have seen, ending included.
ОтветитьI learned nothing from this video.
ОтветитьYou should watch the tv show Bates Motel
