While I agree knowing brain function is important in understanding consciousness I find it regrettable to refer to autism as a disease. Some autism restricts a person quite a bit. The question therefore is to study the brain for answers about what exactly functionality is. Divergence from human language standards may be desirable because language requires so much brain support. At this stage of research the model of joint attention structure is disabled in autism seems to mean language acquisition is disrupted but often autistic people perform well in narrow cultural activities. Are we saying then language is the central function of human society? I think answering that question is not about disease assumptions that riddle the medical model of mental health issues.
