9 Mistakes Homeowners Should Avoid When Hiring a Contractor

Hi, I'm Barry Randall. I'm the owner of The Garden Design Co. We're the only nationwide design and build landscaping company for homeowners looking to totally transform their gardens and driveways. Now, through our YouTube channel, we are sharing all the best tips, insights, and advice any homeowner will ever need to ensure a professional service from a local contractor.
On this video, I want to talk to you about the nine mistakes homeowners should avoid when hiring a contractor.
0:27 Hiring Different People
The first thing to avoid is hiring two different people to design and build your garden for you. What happens is it creates an accountability dead zone. So, the designer comes in with one idea and then you hire a contractor with the other idea. And if there's a problem that's going on in the garden, the designer blames the landscaper, and the landscaper will blame the designer.
0:47 Over-designing Your Garden
The second thing to avoid is overdesigning your garden. Most people over design their garden to include everything but the kitchen sink. So now, they're cramping their garden in, but they're also creating a garden that's way beyond their budget before actually finding out how much the price is.
1:04 Designing for Sunny Days
The third thing to avoid is creating a garden that's just available for the summer months. Most people forget that the weather changes seasonally and they design just for the sunny months. Well, there's spring and there's autumn, and there's winter. So, your garden's gotta be prepared for all of those seasons.
1:19 Mountains of Aftercare
The fourth thing to avoid when you have your garden done is mountains of aftercare afterwards. Most people underestimate the amount of aftercare their good ideas are going to need to keep them good long beyond the landscaper is finishing the project.
1:34 Poor Foundations
The fifth thing to avoid is poor foundations. Most people do not understand the basic construction principles, and then their garden falls down months down the line due to poor foundations. Foundations are one of the most important things that you can get right in your garden. Put the investment into getting the foundations right and the garden's going to last a lot, lot longer.
1:54 Starting Without A Schedule
The sixth thing to avoid is starting without a schedule. Most people midjudge the time it takes to build the garden, and they miss all of their deadlines. There's the weather to consider, the suppliers, delays to consider. There's sickness to to consider as well. But most people just don't consider these things before they start. So, they've got this amazing family barbecue planned for a couple of months down the line, but they have no schedule that they're working to. And then they completely miss that, and the deadlines become a problem as the project starts to develop. And then what happens is they start to rush the project and then it doesn't last as long as it should.
2:31 Skip Important Steps
Now, the seventh thing to avoid is going too quickly in the early part of the design stages. And a lot of people skip those important steps in the design process at the early stages, and it just costs you big later. So, make sure that the survey is done correctly, that the survey takes the amount of time that it needs to get all of the measurements right, because if you skip this bit at the early stage, it's just going to cause you problems later on down the line.
2:55 Invest Big in the Design and Build
Now, the eighth thing to avoid is not going too big on the design and build and leaving nothing to maintain the project afterwards. Now, if you're going to put a big investment into the design process, a big investment into the construction of the garden, you want to make sure that you've got some room in your budget to maintain it afterwards with professional maintenance. Now, a mentor once said to me, you wouldn't buy a BMW and go on the motorway without getting breakdown cover. And I feel like people in their gardens need to think about the same things. Design and build, yes, absolutely you should invest a lot of money into those things, but also save a budget to have it professionally maintained after.
3:35 Project Never Gets Completed
And the final thing to avoid, which is the biggest bugbear in the industry, is that most projects get started, but they never get completed. Now, this could be due to price increases on materials because they have a design done and they leave it too long to get started, or just poor advice at the design stage.
