Hey Meredith, great review. Always love the content. How long have you been making music as a career path? I'm trying to make music into my job so I can do what I love. Never had the funds to upgrade from my laptop and headphones, but I got a job that pays well enough that in a few months I'll have a dedicated work space with gear. 103 can be argued to be better than u87 technically...its more quiet than u87....its more sensitive than u87 ..its transformerless so you can add transformer via preamp...

Mics typically fall into omnidirectional (any direction, although they tend to still have weak and strong directions), bi-directional (front and back but not sides), cardioid (front and a bit of side but not the back), and hypercardiod (less side pickup than hypercardiod but a bit more from the back). You can look up pictures of the pickup patterns that will help explain it a bit.

Before looking up the price I was like "Oh a somewhat affordable Neumann mic?". No, it's $1000 instead of $3000. If you have money to blow I'm sure it's nice, but don't blow all your money on one piece of gear kids. Especially when you can get a perfectly good condenser mic for like $300-$400. (Nice that Meridith got one, just not a piece of gear for anyone who doesn't already have experience making a living making music.)

Wow your vocal sounded so pretty unprocessed too! I had this mic for a few days and loved how it sounded on my daughter, but for me it was too harsh for my voice. I might still get it again just for my daughters use because I definitely miss that silkiness that the mic has.

Wow! Starting out with you “love this mic” captures exactly how I feel too! I recently had to decide between the TLM and the Sennheiser MKH416 and they both have superb sound. But the Neumann got me right in the heart with its subltle differences I heard in my voice. It was like when I first heard myself from it I was like “that’s it, that’s the mic” and I fell in love. Its sounds dumb to say but man is it true
