Evanescence has some of the most consistently incredible music I've ever heard. I would highly recommend their entire discography, including their new albums.

If Chester Bennington had been ok with it, Shinoda would have been the rapper in this track (which Evanescence had wanted).

I thought they were cool, loved this song (still do), but then I played Final Fantasy Tactics. On the party screen one of the named knights Stop Poking Me lines was "Evanescence..what a sad word." which prompted me to look it up.

Honestly, the fact that the band was forced to add male vocals to an already complete song and still made it sound amazing is just incredible.

even though I've heard this song a billion times, and even recently... that first bit made every hair on my body perk up and my skin shiver. 🤷🏼‍♂️ It's just a song that seeps into your heart, curls up there, and smoulders. It's impossible to ignore, and demands action.

Wasn't aware of the label meddling with the chorus. I guess that explains the decades long pattern of utter disrespect towards that male vocals of that portion.

That white boy rap part nearly ruined the song for me, so I fully agree with Amy Lee on this.

We better get a "Save Me" by Shinedown explanation eventually, it's one of those underrated gems that deserves some due praise

I hate to say it but I think the producer was right about this one. McCoy's part elevated this from a good Evanescence song to an iconic anthem of its generation.

This song is about the mother goddess calling out to father sky for spiritual salvation, however he is similarly indisposed and in fact requires HER help. But they are separated by the illusion of distance. See also: Madonna - Frozen.

I'm so glad you mentioned the Synthesis version of the song; the original release holds a special place in my heart but the Synthesis edition is truer to Lee's original vision for the song and is also incredibly gorgeous and my new favorite Evanescence song in general, and I feel that it's important to bring up, however briefly, the circumstances behind the presence of a male vocalist at all on the original release of the track whenever I talk about the song(s)

The song is not the same without McCoy's voice.. the version without it just feels odd... I think it wasn't something the band wanted at first, but it ended being a good thing in the end

The Iconic band from the 00s

I worked with the producer of this record (who also produced the first 12 Stones record which is how Paul McCoy ended being the male vocal on the track. )

I have all kinds of stories from when this was being made. A great record by a very talented band. Working with that producer is how I learned so hearing this record also makes me think of the techniques he showed me. He had a million tricks that we used on smaller records that were done on smaller records but he finally put them all together in the magic way that made this work so well.

The producer was the lead guitarist for the band Ugly Kid Joe in the early 90's. Great guitarist and songwriter in his own right.

I think Bring me to life is a cool song. For me it’s still one of the weaker songs from their Fallen album, which is just awesome! So many great songs!

I think I like the "original" composition better, but think it would have been just fine/better without the rough male vocals. Both are good, just synthesis has a much different feel to it that is less my style.

I do not like goth metal or nu and most modern metal and truthfully in my opinion I think the best metal was in the 70s for satanic dark metal and in the 80s ( mostly mid and late 80s) hair metal that's really popy

Not to be One Of Those Metal People but I don’t think Evanescence can be qualified as “goth metal.” I think they’re 100% goth rock.

I would qualify a band like Cradle of Filth as a perfect example of gothic metal. You can categorize some other more symphonic bands like Nightwish as gothic metal too, but IMO that’s more gothic SYMPHONIC metal. CoF is the quintessential fusion of actual metal and gothic sensibilities for me, and although I didn’t intent this comment to turn into a rant on how much I love them, here we are.

Since you’re a metal fan, would you ever consider breaking down a CoF song? Probably kind of a tall order because of how lengthy they (of course) are, but man I’d love to see it. Your comment on the Iron Man video about cinematic song writing immediately brought CoF to mind, where almost every song is a gothic narrative poem set to music that sets out to reflect the events of the story.

If you did a video on Beneath the Howling Stars I would name my first born after u. Just sayin
