Russia can't even populate and develop its Far East today so it's no wonder they got rid of Alaska, they would've lost it eventually anyway.

To say that Russia colonized Alaska is a bit of an exaggerations. They set up a couple of villages to trade with the natives along the coast. There are more people in Antarctica now then there are ever Russian in Alaska.
