"Everything Happens to Me" (1940) is a pop standard written by Tom Adair (lyrics) and Matt Dennis (music). It was first recorded by the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra featuring Frank Sinatra. Unusually, the song focused on Sinatra's vocal, with no trombone solo by Dorsey. Years later, Sinatra rerecorded the song with the Hollywood String Quartet; this version was featured on his 1957 album Close to You.[1]

I’ve always loved Chet Baker. What he lacks in power or range he makes up for with style, arrangement and emotion. “My Funny Valentine” is probably my favorite of his but this one I’m surprised to say, I have never heard slow, introspective and melancholy.

One night in the Pinnacle Lounge, I sat alone as Art Porter played a set of such songs. The beautiful girl I had been seeing and had arranged to meet, I knew wasn’t coming. The music was beautiful and sad. Especially as I watched an old black man stand and offer his hand to a woman with whom he had obviously spent a lifetime.

After a tumultuous relationship, break up and 30 years later, she is still beautiful to me and makes my heart skip a beat.
