Kind of annoying though that they didn't even take the damaged heart to the fortress to see if it was even possible to repair

The whole ultrasonics being able to hurt Kryptonians was always stupid. The can control their super hearing filtering and blocking whatever sounds and frequencies they want. That is how they can filter out everything else but for what they want. Plus ultrasonics hurt by causing physical damage to the middle/inner ear and nerves. Kryptonian inner ears and such are just as indestructible as everything else about them.

I would have thought Superman's heart is tougher than that. The skin can dodge bullets but the heart can be easily stepped on?

I don't think that Lex Luthor crushed his heart a few episodes prior. Lex Luthor crushed A heart, but not necessarily Superman's actual heart. I believe that Lex pulled a 'fast one' on Jordan to make him believe that he destroyed his father's heart, but Lex still probably has the real heart hidden somewhere.
