I had a toy model of the mercedes you talk about, in the yellow colour, only it was a convertible with operating doors. Loved it to death!

As a German, I'm outraged about the devastating blast to German car engeneering VW caused. The whole magement + everyone with an S in the beginning of their job description, should be in prison and VW dismantled and bought off by other companies. VW should not exist anymore, because they made a criminal mockery out of the made in Germany seal of quality.

Anyone that drove behind these diesel cars could smell their pollution and knew the government tests were meaningless. VW counted on the government being incompetent.

This is one of the things I like about south africa, here we just updated the ecu, and the customers were on their way, no further hassles, no paper work to be filed with the government, all just honky dory.

So these greedy a$$holes somehow thought that their criminal deception would not be outed some day? Typical of so many stupid criminals. Money first before intelligence. To think this happened because of a 'branding' issue over the Mercedes technology. Winterkorn will never see the inside of a jail cell, unlike common folk whose crimes don't come close to this worldwide sham.

I live in Seattle and for 6 months lived in San Diego back in 2021. I've done that drive between Seattle and LA many, many times and between Redding, CA and LA, it's the most boring drive I've ever done (if you take Interstate 5).

Pro Tip: get off of Interstate 5 at Redding, head east over the Sierra Nevada mountains and join up with US 395. It's far, far more scenic, less traffic and you won't get stuck behind all of the semi trucks trying to pass each other. The extra distance is minimal and I've found it doesn't add more than a few more hours of travel time but it's worth it

VW would've likely lost at least as much money if their US emissions test failed and they weren't allowed to sell their cars in the US. It may have been a calculated business decision.

In my opinion the state are the culpit. They made rules too tight, and car manufactures had a hard time to comply to the strict rules. Its a non-sese making a rule from 1.0 g/mi to just 0.07. It makes no sense a redution this big.

This was the start of a revolution against the american EPA. And really was a great thing in hindsight. Because VW knew that these protocals were bullshit.

SCR, EGR, and DPF systems are highly prone to failure, can cause catastrophic engine failure in extreme circumstances (which is far more common than it should be) and these systems require the usage of highly toxic fluids to operate as designed. And have proven to not significantly alter emissions of green house gasses long term.

This is by definition, a lobbying effort with no real motive aside from greed and ignorance. I applaud VW for their actions and wish they would've continued to be defiant.

Prior to being exposed, VW could be confident that their hidden emissions test cheating software would work because ECU code is proprietary and covered by the DMCA.

In prior years there had been petitions to add exemptions to the DMCA for ECU software so that it could be tested for safety.

Those exemptions weren't added however, their opposition prevailed by claiming that this would be burdensome and hamper innovation.

One of the groups who petitioned against the exemptions? The EPA

Go figure.

The ironical aspect is that it was a "wolf biten by the sheep" case, because germans - followed closely by french - are considering americans, including specialists and scientists, being too dumb compared to europeans to figure out such top-of-the-notch fraud :)

NOx are those things that have a net lowering effect on the greenhouse effect and result when fuel is burned more completely, or in other words, when fuel is burned in the way that lowers CO2 emissions and fuel consumption to the greatest extent possible more NOx is produced.
it is always interesting how concerned we get about health risks as soon as the solution to those concerns results in an immediate and significant profit increase for oil companies.

$Billions in penalties but I wonder how much of that money benefitted the car owners or was put toward reducing air polution? As always the poor sods at the bottom of the management pyramid carry all the blame. Jail the "directing minds" and watch that change, and let's start with the big banks!!!

An important part of the diesel kerfuffle is that the EU subsidized the development of diesel engines for general purpose because diesel was an excess byproduct of oil refinement and there was a legend an diesel engine could be developed that was on par w gasoline engines but has higher efficiency. The fact is that the public sunk insane amounts of resources in to developing a diesel engine that, if set to same emissions standard as gasoline one, will never have greater efficiency. Just another time ecology was the purported reason for making everything worse for everyone.

Diesel engines love heat(run better right up till things melt) which produces NOx The idea to reduce NOx completely destroyed diesel as a viable fuel. The economy and power they HAD were eliminated by cooling the combustion chamber (egr etc.)
The VW solution (shutting the emission controls off when not being tested) was pure genius I would love to own one with the original software.

My friend had one of these cars and I didn't know it was not gasoline until he told me. I still didn't believe him until he showed me on the dash .
It was so smooth, quick, quiet, and powerful.
He kept it, got thousands of dollars, a simple computer reprogram that didn't change anything according to him.
It was political elements that made VW have to "buy back" the cars. They could have simply did a recall.... But they wanted that money. Those billions to launder.
Those people caused more harm to the environment by crushing all those cars instead of just reprogram.
Criminals IMHO.
