It's an interesting discussion point on Christianity, especially for me now as I'm reading books by Kyriacos Markides on Eastern Orthodox Christianity as represented by the monks in Northern Greece at Mount Athos. His books highlight an experiential knowledge of God which has perhaps been lost to Western Christianity which more traces it's lineage from Aquinas and the propensity to reason your way towards knowledge of God. It maybe lost that contemplative aspect that the Eastern Orthodox branches have, and crucially a true mystic knowledge of God.
