Way late answer but - I believe it is common courtesy to pronounce German names the German way, really, why should there be any other way ?. Of course BMW is pronounced BMV !, and why would you pronounce VW incorrectly when it's obviously 'Fau Vee' (my phonetics !). I recently heard that Germans try to pronounce foreign names correctly, how courteous !. I have always pronounced all the German names mentioned as examples in the 'vid' correctly, with the possible exception of Lufthansa for example, where I incorrectly stress the second syllable. There's only one correct way to pronounce a foreign word - the native way - 'VERTERS' (my phonetics again !).

I didn't know about the Haribo brand name. It was my first favorite food, as my first memories were in Germany (my father was in the Air Force there until I turned 6). We just called them goomy bears. I spell it that way so Americans will know what I mean. They say Gummy Bears, but Gumi is Goomy not gummy.

As a Brit in Germany, i'm continuously struck by german lack of originality when coming up for buisness names.
Literally the whole country is just variations on the al-di, e-de-ka theme, whether it's a builder, auto mechanic or store.
Seeing something clever and witty like a hair salon called "Curl up and dye" would just never happen, never.
(lovin the rest though)

The DM informed me that my character comes from a German-adjacent fantasy kingdom, and I was like "oh cool" and didn't think much of it. Now I know that Germans can't say the th sound and I can't say Mercedes like a German can 😭Your videos are super helpful, thank you!

A few thoughts as an American born native Spanish and English speaker who's learning Japanese.

Most of these brand names I was pronouncing with a Spanish accent which happens to be closer to the original German pronunciation (for example Adidas, Nivea, Porche, Haribo). I didn't know other Americans pronounced them differently as I grew up and am living in a Spanish speaking city (born in Miami, living in San Francisco).

Something that I find interesting is how Germans take the first syllable of several words to create a new word a lot like Japanese does.

The MAHONESA sauce takes its name from Mahón (currently Maó), capital of Menorca, Balearic Islands, Spain.
Regardless of what the Real Academia de la Lengua Española, RAE (Royal Academy of the Spanish Language) says, and the widespread use of the incorrect name worldwide, you can consult the documented work that the Spanish Nobel and Cervantes laureate, etc., Camilo José Cela, did years ago on the subject… will you continue using the 'Y' instead of the 'H'? Well, that: not 'mayonnaise' neither 'maionese', nor ‘mayo”, but MAHONESA.
Our gastronomy is part of our culture.
* Tip for foreigners: H in Spanish is always a mute letter.

In the USA, we had a military General named Schwarzkopf that accomplished one of the most awe inspiring military operations ever achieved. Gen. Norman Schwazkopf Jr. led the allied forces in the invasion of Iraq/ liberation of Kuwait during “Operation Desert Storm.”
His name was always pronounced (Shwarts-kahf) in any media during the time. I believe this might have added to our pronouncing the Deutsch brand this way.

In Hungarian Porsche is pronounced exactly as in German. That reminds me of an old Hungarian Dad joke that needs some explanation, but I hope it still can be enjoyed.
East Germany produced the car Trabant. The joke goes like this "What happens if a Trabant has an accident? It turns into a Porsche".
The Hungarian word "por se", pronounced exactly as German Porsche, means not even dust.

Very fun. I studied German in high school and uni and while my knowledge of the language is academic, not conversational, I did learn (from Germans) how the language is pronounced. There is a German company called Molotow that makes art supplies. It depends very much on your language background how you would approach pronounce this as a word (not a proper noun), but the first thing I learned about German pronunciation is that "W" is invariably pronounced "V" AND Molotow is a German company so it seems to me it should have a "V" sound at the end. I have only heard it said MolotoV ONE time. I always hear Molotow like towing your car. But I don't get to talk to German speakers that often. Now, if you are talking about a Molotov cocktail explosive, named for a Russian and spelled with a V, that's always pronounced MolotoV in North America. I get it, but this disconnect makes me a little nuts. German is spoken by A LOT of people and the W/V thing is not an obscure rule. Please tell me if I am wrong about this! Anyway, fun video. I didn't know Adidas is German! And if I ever learned the correct pronunciation of Mercedes, I forgot it!
