Exactly three minutes after they start trying Shaggy and Scooby bump into and do something that pisses off Light on accident and he goes to try and use the Death Note but because he doesn't like his real name yet recognizes it's his true name even the Shinigami eyes are confused. Giving just enough clues for Velma to piece it together in the following two minutes. Making for a total of 5 minutes of investigation and 71 hours and 54 minutes of trap-building. All for the last minute to be the one Kira is caught in the trap and busted. Taking a compound total of exactly 72 hours to catch Kira. And it'd be less if Fred wasn't feeling super extra about incorporating anime references because he's in Japan and wanting and make it Jackie Chan-proof just so he could brag (Daphne does point out Chan is not japanese but he insists)

It does only take L like a day to narrow down that Kira is high school student in Light's region related to a cop

Shaggy would be great bait for the death note because nobody calls him norville. So light would never be able to kill him

You wanna know what would be hysterical? If they sent Scooby and Shaggy to look for clues and they end up encountering Light. From Light's perspective it was just be a guy and a dog, and Shaggy always introduces himself as Shaggy, despite that not being his actual name. So if Light ever tried to kill Shaggy, then it wouldn't work.

I honestly think that the gang won't solve this. Look no mean to downplay the gang there one of my favorite group of friends in media and they've been through crazy stuff but Light is an example of a villain they normally struggle against or downright lose to. While Fred and Velma are smart they've been fooled before by people who use similar manipulation and cover techniques to Light. Plus they've also gotten the wrong guy sometimes.

Also Most Scooby Doo villains don't really want to kill them just scare them away or just mess with them. I've seen a lot of scooby movies and scooby seires were the Villains straight up caught most of the gang and had them at there mercy but instead of straight up killing them he/she just holds them prisoner or puts them in some sort of trap. So even if he can't kill Shaggy and Scooby through the death note he would find another way to do it.

listen... I think most people go about this all wrong. this isn't the Scooby gang getting dropped into Death Note and being made to play detectives... this is Light showing up as a special guest on a Scooby Doo episode, like Batman and Robin, or the Harlem Globetrotters.

L contacts the Scooby gang once he realizes that the case may involve supernatural entities, because he'd heard that they deal with these sorts of things all the time, and he wanted to consult them for their opinion.

side note: this would have to be at a point in the case where Misa is already introduced, and after she and Light have gotten their memories back, because the Death Note cast is only around for one episode, so you have to introduce the Scooby Doo audience, who may have never seen Death Note before, to the full ensemble of relevant characters for the first time.

the gang first arrives to the task force headquarters, and Light doesn't think much of them when they're introduced. but he quickly realizes that they're going to be a problem when they suggest that a spooky ghost might be the culprit behind the killings, thinking that they've already figured out about Ryuk. whether by accident or on purpose, they're almost immediately closer to knowing the truth than anyone.

this is when Light figures he'll have to start trying to kill them... and if he has to pick just one to start with, it'd be Fred. this is because Light is a mysogynist, and doesn't think women can threaten him, and he's not gonna take the guy he saw eating dog treats seriously.

so you get scenes of Light talking to Fred in a way where Fred clearly thinks that Light is being friendly, and Light is clearly trying to figure out Fred's full name. there'd have to be at least one scene where Light swipes Fred's ID, writes down the name, it doesn't work, and so he casually "found Fred's ID and wanted to give it back to him" so he can see Fred's reaction. Fred, of course, is like "oh, that's okay," and pulls out like 8 more, all with different names. Fred James, Fred Johnson, Fred Jergens... he explains that the Scooby gang often has to dress in disguise, and they adopt aliases all the time, especially for sneaking into places they aren't allowed normally. so he's always got a bunch of these on hand, just in case. Light then asks him what his real name is, passing it off as conversational. inside, he is seething. Fred just says "Fred Jones" and winks. Light instantly dismisses this as another alias that he's using for the Kira case, and starts trying to research the Scooby gang's identities behind the scenes.

meanwhile, Daphne and Misa have hit it off famously from moment one. they're both fashion hair and makeup girlies, and we get at least one scene where they dress in each other's aesthetic. the conversation gets interesting when they begin chatting about what it's like for Misa, being famous and all. Daphne starts getting information about Misa's parents dying, and how she's actually kind of sympathetic to Kira's cause... Misa actually gets close to slipping up and giving away the entire case multiple times in this conversation, and the audience is aware of Rem skulking in the background throughout the whole scene. later, after the existence of the shinigami is revealed, we'll learn that Rem was intending to kill Daphne if she learned too much at any point during their talk.

Velma is starstruck by L, and the two of them end up talking a lot with Soichiro Yagami. they brief Velma on the case, going over some of the plot points that have transpired between the beginning of the series and now, and as they describe the case, Velma ends up making a lot of the same connections as L while she's following along. Velma would probably latch onto L's same suspicion of Light, but she smartly doesn't say anything about it in front of Soichiro Yagami. instead, she's the one who secures an invite to dinner at the Yagami residence, because Soichiro thinks these kids must be tired, and someone has to take care of them while they're here.

and at the same time, Shaggy and Scooby have been chatting with Matsuda, who they build a quick friendship with. they're basically of the same opinion, that all this Kira stuff is, like, super creepy, man.

later, when the gang is at dinner with the Yagamis, we get some typical gags, like Shaggy and Scooby eating too much. but Misa insisted on joining them for dinner because she wanted to keep talking to Daphne, and over the course of the meal, she latches onto the idea that Fred and Daphne would make a great couple, just like her and Light. this leads into subjects like how Light and Misa met, and why they like each other... but while that conversation is going on, Velma asks to use the restroom as an excuse to look for clues, and she brings Shaggy and Scooby because they need to stop eating the Yagami's out of house and home.

when they get to the bathroom, Velma bypasses it, and Shaggy's like "wait, but the bathroom is here" which prompts Velma to explain that she was just using that as an excuse to look for clues. she suspects Light herself now, and wants to get to the bottom of this once and for all. they sneak upstairs, looking down the hallway at all the bedrooms, and Velma notices the paper sticking out of Light's doorway. his fake method of determining if anyone's been in there. Velma goes in to look around, followed closely by Scooby and Shaggy. I think in her snooping, Velma would come across the drawer with the notebook, notice the false bottom, and figure out how to open it. but somehow, Shaggy would be the first person to pick up the actual Death Note, and he and Scooby would somehow manage to be the only ones who touch it. they take the book with them, but then they have to put everything back together, and leave. Velma does remember to put the paper back in the door, but in her haste, doesn't do anything about the doorknob.

there would also have to be some gag in there, about Shaggy pilfering an apple from dinner, then he sets it down for a second in Light's room, turns around, and it's gone. he ends up telling the Yagamis that he thinks their house is haunted. that made Light nervous already, but when he realizes the notebook is gone, that's when he'd really start freaking out.

and of course, Shaggy and Scooby have to have a classic Scooby Doo "the ghost is chasing us" scene with Ryuk, which the rest of the gang doesn't believe until each of them is passed the notebook via comedic fumbling, and joins the chase scene. Ryuk eventually gets them to calm down enough that he can explain that he doesn't give a shit about hurting them, he just wants more apples. the gang learn that Ryuk is connected to someone in this case, but Ryuk won't just tell them who... that'd be no fun. Shaggy and Scooby would probably end up really hitting it off with Ryuk, but this is also when everything starts to unravel for Light.

with the information that all of them have at this point put together, I think they'd have enough to make their final deduction.

I think you meant 3 years. Remember, L only caught Light in Kanto because of a clever scheme to simultaneously determine what area of the world he was in, but determine how he kills.

As much as I love our cute four eyed resident genius, even she would take time. Velma would come to similar conclusions as L, but would take more time to act. L acts immediately on small evidence, the gang… not so much. Remember, they’re American. They usually turn over the culprits to the cops. In this case, they have to do the leg work themselves. Catching Light is unlike anyone else they’ve ever seen. They seen supernatural things before but never a supernatural killer. Hell, in most cases, they don’t even go after serial killers. Most of their marks are con men, petty thieves, and white collar crime.

thing that confused me about what they said Fred traps always fail they never capture the monster it’s always shaggy and scooby getting chased and trapping the monster and velma only says she knows who the monster really is after they are unmasked not before

Its always Fred amd Velma. On occasion shaggy accidentally finishes every. Most of the time Daphne is juat Getting cought or doing nothing. Scooby-Doo is rarely ever used for his dog purposes like sniffing and the dog instincts. Most of the time Scooby and shaggy are just lioking for food or being scared. Even if the Villian is caught some times Scooby will put the mask on, look at shaggy, and he will get scared like its the first time he's ever seen it.
