So it's...
- Low Poly
- Low Resolution Texturing
- Baked-in Shading
- (this)
- Low Res Rendering
- Capped Framerate

The truth about PS1 graphics is that PS1 was garbage hardware from a company that has long been ethical garbage.

So nice !! so do I have to do fake drawing (vertex coloring) into EVERY objects in game? not using any lights in game? (light baking in unity or something..) I really want to find method how to setup lighting in unity that looks like real ps1 style game.... I'm using unity so i could slightly understand your video haha 😢 btw, your video is AWSOME!!

I knew that it needed to be pixelated and that the vertices would shake a little I manage to emulate it perfectly.

Ps1 graphic is beautiful. The only problem for me few games had the camera that shaking or spin too much, it gives motion sickness sometimes.

I just found this and this was very helpful and insightful!

I’m trying to figure out how simply displaying the base colour would work in Unreal Engine? If anyone knows then I would appreciate it! My scene is currently swimming in darkness

I played tons of the Crash Bandicoots when i was a kid, 1, 2, 3, that racing game and Crash Bash.... Good old days before internet. Wild to think that my generation was the last one to live a childhood without it's influence, 1995

Lighting is so powerful for fidelity. Excellent lighting can make a game look one generation ahead, whereas abysmal lighting can make it look a generation behind.

that being said, PS1 was able to work with more high poly models, too. especially in fighting games like Dead or Alive - you wouldn't se it often, but sometimes you would see 3D models that seem "round" -ish and not that cube or triangular-ish ^^;

Truth is we never needed graphics past PS2 when games were simpler they were better just think back to games like jack and daxter ratchet and clank the great majority of PS2 jrpgs they were all significantly higher quality than the games we play today

One huge thing is resolution. A lot of things were done on very low quality CRT televisions, and as such needed to be rendered accordingly. That means exaggerating features where needed and removing unneccessary detail, way too many people make it high resolution when that's the opposite of a good ps1 style game.

Devs in the past "had to" come up with clever ways to save space or use limited tech, I respect them for their creativity, but I also respect those who choose to use their styles today because it actually looks good while still being low system requirements.

Triple AAA idiots never seem to understand that people will always choose gameplay, fun, and story over graphics and political opinions.
A whole bunch of retro or pixel 2D "ageless" artstyled indie games like Noita, Stardew Valley, Undertale etc, have already outsold many modern multimillion budget games, which is honestly pretty refreshing to see.
Now, we just need to go back to offline/local play and private servers and I'll believe the 'industry' is healing
