Tiamat is the large water covered planet which is struck by the satellites of Marduk creating the Earth, the Moon is caught in Earth's gravitational fields and the remnants of the collision is the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter which was Tiamat's orbit prior to the collision. The so called battle is just a description of the planets and their settling into their present orbits. The planets are named after Sumerian gods and Marduk was changed into this name by the Babylonians and was previously called Nibiru.

The commentary really didn't go into the most important differences between Enuma Elish and Genesis, namely the way that Genesis de-mythologizes the God of creation and excises all the other gods. Note also that, in Enuma Elish, the godss come from a sexual congress between Apsu and Tiamat in their "waters" commingling. This is completely absent in Genesis. The origin of the waters in Genesis is not of interest to its composer, because the focus of that story is not the relationships that gods have to each other (aka mythology) but the relationship that God has with man (aka theology).

To understand what you are actually reading... each city had a made up god. So when these gods do battle they were city to city battles. The people back then had their team and would make a big deal about their god going up against another citys god when in teality their city was going up against another city. Cities being basically mini countrys in their time.

So when one city defeated another they would destroy all the statues or bury them and declare the losers god dead.

The bible is of a people who kept the old history but didnt declare a god for each city. It was one god for all coties among the same people... which reduced war and violence among the people. They werent the jewish people. They were the hebrews. Jews means of the tribe of judah which came much later. One of many hebrew tribes. All jews are hebrew but not all hebrews are jews.

Anyways. Most of these god killings explain why certain cities wrre left in ruin and how they got that way, what city attacked them, and how they did it overall.

In the forst example here... they snuck in and killed them in their sleep to gain an upper hand. It happened because that city of apsu was annoyed with how loud the younger smaller settlements were (probably partied alot) and was gonna kill them all. When you hear in context of how long they lived you get a general understanding of how long the city stayed before it was destroyed.

Anybody else find it interesting that the last tablet refers to numerous different names for the god of the heavens and in the religions Christianity and Islam the big reveal is always that there’s only one god not multiple.
