But the sisters are sterile. So making sure the queen has more offsprings is useless long term. What really counts is the elite ants (princesses) those who will start their own colonies once the queen dies. How much of the DNA does a worker ant share with her elite sister? and what determines the number of those elite (future queens). Does the worker's allegiance change once the queen dies, from "save the queen" to "save the princess"? and if so, how do they choose which princess to serve?

This video helps me get my brain around eusocial insects. I knew that workers are almost 'clones' in a sense, explaining why they are so willing to sacrifice themselves, but I wasn't exactly... sure how it worked. Makes me appreciate paper wasps even more than I already do.
