Venus flytraps are carnivorous plants that capture and digest insects and arachnids, but catching a centipede might be a bit challenging for them. Centipedes are fast-moving and can have a lot of legs, which could potentially help them escape the trap.



However, if a centipede is caught in a Venus flytrap, the plant's modified leaves, called lobes, would close around the prey if it triggers the sensitive trigger hairs inside the trap. The trap then forms a tight seal, and the plant secretes digestive enzymes to break down the insect or other prey for nutrient absorption.


It's worth noting that Venus flytraps are adapted to catch smaller insects, and capturing larger or more powerful prey might not be as successful. Additionally, Venus flytraps primarily rely on attracting and capturing insects as a supplement to their nutrient intake, as they still need sunlight and soil nutrients for overall growth and health.


If you observed a Venus flytrap catching a centipede, it would be an interesting event, as it showcases the plant's adaptation for carnivory.

Arising from a bulb-like rootstock, the Venus flytrap produces small white flowers on an upright stem that can reach heights of 20–30 cm (8–12 inches). Its leaves, which measure 8–15 cm (3–6 inches) in length, feature hinged blades along the midline, allowing the circular lobes to fold together and ensnare insects. This trapping mechanism is activated by six sensitive hairs—three on each lobe—that induce the lobes to close within about half a second when triggered by prey. The leaf's surface contains glands that release red sap, aiding in the digestion of insects and contributing to the leaf's red, flower-like appearance. The digestion process takes approximately 10 days, after which the leaf reopens. Each trap can capture and digest three or four insects before undergoing withering and eventual death.
