I still think publicly Barry’s dad should of expressed how good Barry was and how much he loved them. He just made it weird for Barry by saying Barry was the third best running back.

Barry Sanders, Billy Sims, Calvin Johnson. Detroit is notorious for making the greatest QB talents ever end their careers early

Whether or not the people saying it are lions fans or not, I’m happy people realize that Barry is the best to ever do it. Emmit is definitely up there, Jim Brown, Eric Dickerson, AP, and few others. But Barry was and is a league of his own.

In a way, his dad did Barry a favor by putting ahead of him two of the greatest players to ever lace 'em up. Because that gave Barry something to aspire to. Already one of the best ever, Barry's dad placed two icons of the game ahead of him as a goal that was always in front of him, and what kept him out there competing and getting better and better each season.

Not that Barry needed much prodding. What I've always admired about him is his humility, his quiet confidence, and being completely comfortable in his own skin. He and his dad were two very different personalities; but there's no question they impacted each other in ways you rarely see. No question William loved Barry and respected and admired his talent and work ethic. And it's clear that Barry understood his dad, even if he might not have fully as a kid. We want nothing more than to please our parents, but doing that while being ourselves fully is a rare quality; how could William not have respected that?

William got a lotta heat for injecting himself into Barry's career and the people coaching him; but they'll never be able to say it was for lack of love or caring. If he thought his coaches were setting Barry up for failure he said so -- not because of his ego but because he loved Barry that much. I don't fault him for that. Compare William to the landscape in front of us currently; far as I'm concerned, William should be respected and pointed to as an exemplar of parenthood.

Read this to know how truly amazing Barry Sanders is as not just a player but as a person. I went to Lakeside Mall in Sterling Heights Michigan with 5 of my friends in the summer of 1991, we were in 7th grade. We went there in the early afternoon on a weekday when the mall was not busy to go to a huge arcade inside the mall named Tilt. Standing outside of the arcade stood Barry Sanders. To a 7th grader it was like a meeting a superhero. He was not there to play games, he was there to meet us and any other kids that were lucky enough to go to the arcade that day. It was just the 5 of us talking with Barry Sanders. He stood out there and talk to us about all types of subjects including football and school for at least 30 minutes. We were all so in awe and having so much fun spending some time with him that none of us thought to even get an autograph. That's the type of attention he gave us. He honestly seemed like he enjoyed being there with us. I remember his thighs were as big as my waist, he was amazing on TV but he was so much larger in real life. I only wish that we carried cameras back then because who would believe such a famous and gifted HOF athlete would go to the mall by himself just to make some kids day. That is who Barry Sanders is as a person, he is so much more than his amazing talent, and that's why to me he will always be the greatest running back to ever play the game because he showed us it takes more than just talent to be truly great.

This is the only particular position in all of sports where there is no argument about who was the best to do it at that respected position .PERIOD
