Our aim in the Keiki Covid Campaign project was to empower Keiki voices through songwriting and their visual art creations and through stop motion animation. We gently invited their stories to educate and to inspire their community and beyond.
The Covid-Quarantine and all the changes it brought has affected everyone and especially our children in the way they now see our world. In Hawaiʻi our communities are enveloped in Hawaiian culture and values that influence our day to day interactions and behavior toward one another, it is truly, the Heart of Aloha....the title to their song.
When working with Keiki, teaching artists Melinda Caroll, songwriting, and visual and media artist, Shelley Toon Lindberg root their lesson plans in Na Hopena A’o Statements HA: BREATH with a particular focus for this project on the strengthened sense of responsibility, total well-being and Aloha. Here is our process at Pomaikaʻi Elementary School with the 4th Grade classes. Special Mahalo to Jaydon Isobe, 5th Grade Teacher at Pomaikaʻi Elementary School.
