You sit here blaming the studios for the underpaid staff and animators yet you don't mention the bigger problem that brings that issue, the fans. Their demand brings that problem and this topic is not news to us , animators were always paid less and over worked in bad conditions. From a creators point of view i understand (most) as to why that is but i wont defend the greedy corporations either. Its also a cultural thing that doesn't make sense to an outsider. Just because you voiced it doesn't mean it'll get fixed. The Anime industry has its limit when working with western animation studios and TV corporations, they're hesitant to try things and/or to improve something in the working environment if there is a chance of failing.
And by the way , Netflix should be the one put on the spot since they are the ones paying. They're the ones wanting high quality without spending any big budget. Just like Disney they're greedy corporations with scam intentions for their workers and fans.

Netflix didn't create this problem, but they definitely shouldn't be perpetuating it. Asian Boss did an interview with a Naruto animator who was getting paid 500 dollars a month for full time work. It's so bad that they have subsidized housing for animators in Japan.

This comment doesn't know much of how Japan animation studios work and i really am bad at how to explain things (and limited knowledge) but just get this, every studio (for the exception of Toei which ironically does good work and has good pay for starting animators) is underpaid including Madhouse which by the way made OPM and the budget was just average, it was just the people who directed and animated it that had such a passion for the Manga and the Webtoon and with Netflix "underpaying", it's kind of different and i don't know much but let's just say they do more than Crunchyroll

side note: i know at least a few of my former buddies work at animation at least 3 of them. and theyre freaking underpaid. what kinda gets in my gear is that. they're okay with that as long as they see their name on the screen. dont get me wrong i know how it feels, im a comic illustrator and i love seeing my work printed. but i also love money. i guess my buddies dont love money enough. thats why they dont know how to negotiate. my weekly salary is more than their monthly wage, that's how underpaid they are. one thing is for sure. the studio head dont have the balls to ask for a higher bid.

As an animator in Japan it is hard to see what’s true or not. I am doing very well. But the West and China are trying to propagandize against Japan to take it over.

Japan has a big concentration of some of the best animators in the world working for pennies, I think studios from other countries should start snatching all of that talent and taking it out of Japan, that way Japanese studios would have to adapt or just die. I love anime, but I would be ok with the entire anime industry dying if that means that the people working on it can get fair pay for the work they do.

(Edit: it makes no sense to me that someone with a highly specialized work that requires a skill that takes a lifetime to train earns less than a cashier at some random shop).

Netflix cannot destroy the anime industry, underpaying artists is the worst thing anyone can do. MAPPA is a brilliant studio with good anime's that were not on Netflix, Netflix needs MAPPA to make good anime not the other way around, they should throw Netflix away.

$20/cut is actually the standard rate in anime. People are really fired up about this $36 number.

Everyone in anime loves their work which is why they accept the low rates. Generally it's not the studios fault. The overall pay and budget system is broken.

The problem won't be solved until the funding structure switches to studios funding independently and not seeking investment capital from networks and toy makers.
