How have I watched Tim Roger's Dragon Quest review a million times and am only now coming across this??

God damn, ole Tim sure does clean up nice. He looks like a scrub here compared to how he looks in his recent action button videos.

"What if fairy tales were really, really good?" is a pretty apt description of the series, yeah. One of the best things about Dragon Quest is that the stories the series tells feel like they could be straight out of an old folkloric storybook. It's classic stuff. I started with DQ9 back in the DS era, and have since played 5 and 11, and have recently started 8. Loved every single one of them. Even with the Hero in Smash now, it's still a criminally underrated series in the west and I really hope it starts getting more of the recognition it deserves.

I got Dragon Quest XI because of his long "review" on it. I'm playing through it now with my little brother and really enjoying it.

I bought it for Christmas, just like I did last year with Persona 5.
Amd just like last year with Persona 5....it seems like I'm going to put in 100+ hours into it, maybe not a second playthrough in the same year, but probably 100+ hours.

I've looked at most of them, played about 15 hours of number five and can honestly say the series hold no appeal to me. Same sounds and music and combat every time just isn't why I play games, things need to evolve and change

The recent Final Fantasy titles are undoubtedly fun and cool but no matter how much I try to, I'm still struggling to feel that certain magical vibe unique to each of the series' titles used to have.....

Dragon Quest mean while, still manages to retain the charm and enchanting adventures the series started with.
It doesn't rely on wanna-be-epic stories or fancy animations and cool explosions.

Agreed - except I would say it "took off" outside of Japan with DQ8, which was very popular in the US and Europe.

Love it! It isn't MY favorite series, but it is on my list as one of the best, consistently stellar series that I would say rivals Zelda in the amount of polish, imagination and excellence. If there is a mainline DQ game coming , you know it will be good.
