I'm so glad that you reacted to this ever since I saw your Instagram post that you were going I couldn't wait to see what you said about it! I was one of the few people who was insanely disappointed that it was going to be a musical because I typically don't like musicals! I also was very on the fence about the first movie because I feel like it sort of glorified his actions in a way and a lot of my friends became sort of obsessed with the joker and kind of treating him like a role model! It's a shame that the second one turned out so poorly!

I agree with everything. It’s not a bad movie it’s just not what it could have been!

Interesting view. I actually liked it more than the 1st one.
Mainly because there's no batman or bruce wayne bullshit in the middle. It's a prison drama.

The movie goes for consequences, romantization of violence and insanity, toxic relationships and other difficult themes. He struggles with guilt for what he's done but he feels so alone, he falls for the first woman who gives him attention. Like one of those crazy women who want to date serial killers. She wants him to be joker, make a show and die, so she can be the Psycho Widow. She tells him not to take his meds. She wants him as insane as he can be.

But he realizes every stupid stunt he makes as joker will cost real human lives, when the guards kill his prison mate for singing.

About the music numbers... the movie follows some older musicals like the super sad Pennies from Heaven or All that Jazz. In those movies the fantasy of the musical numbers make the sad reality hit harder once the music ends. And even the diegetic songs, when there's no fantasy, hit hard. Arthur singing "ne me quitte pas" to her answering machine is totally heartbreaking.

And I'm all for the sad, miserable, dirty stupid way he dies. And I almost understand the guards murdering him after the bombing. Not more broadcast trial. Show's over.
