For a delonghi pressurized portafilter, how nice of a grinder do you really need to get the best shot? I'm willing to spend the money if it makes a difference, but I know with pressurized ones you don't have to be as exact in the grind. Thanks!

I was hoping with the adjustable burs the two new machines would go finer ! Why do you think they make grinders that don't grind any better than the old grind. Thats the biggest problem with my current smart grinder.. I would say it doesn't go fine enough for my Breville dual boiler. Did you have the burs to their finest setting? Will the new burs fit on the old machine? I was considering buying a smart rider pro until now. I would appreciate it if someone could get back to me.

It would be nice to see a comparison between the SmartGrinder Pro and the Rancilio Rocky, Baratza Preciso and Baratza Vario. Until now, the regular SmartGrinder could not compete due to not going fine enough and not offering as many grind settings, but with the newly-added adjustable top burr, I think it's actually the best cost/benefit of all those. I actually had to upgrade my regular SmartGrinder to a Baratza Vario when I got a Rancilio Silvia machine because the SmartGrinder wasn't up to par, but with an adjustable top burr, I think the SmartGrinder Pro could do the job... and for a LOT less money.

SCG, could you please check (and possibly post an "experiment" video) if the adjustable top burr of the Dose Control Pro (and the Smart Grinder Pro) fit the regular Smart Grinder? I'm thinking that if that adjustable burr can be purchased separately, it would make it a very nice upgrade for the regular Smart Grinder... you'd get all the additional grind settings and extra grind range for a lot less than purchasing a whole new grinder if you need the extra range or a super-fine grind.

Excellent Video! Just wondering if you have done a review of the KitchenAid Pro Line Series Burr Coffee grinder?  I'm trying to decide between the Breville Smart and the KitchenAid.

Hi. Great video! I own the Smart Grinder, but I think the coarse setting is not enough for brewing. I mean, even in the coarsest mode, the grinding is too fine for chemex or v60. Is it a bad calibration of the grinder? or I need to upgrade to the Pro version? I want to use it for brew methods, from french press to aeropress.

Too bad Breville thinks of putting steal conical burr that can last for years, but at he same time they have a cheap plastic impeller in the bottom that gets sandblasted in less than 1.5 years of very moderate usage, causing the grinder to clog. Big shame on Breville. The cost of such a repair? 90$ with taxes. So basically, these grinders do break a little bit after the warranty is over. U get what u pay for I guess

Had the Smart Grinder... upgraded to the Pro, and I couldn’t believe the difference. Now exactly sure how the same burrs make such a difference. I know the original Smart Grinder has a lot more ‘play’ in the burrs (vertical and horizontal). Maybe that makes it more inconsistent. Or it could be the additional finer settings on the Pro. But my espresso actually tastes good now.

Does it need to rest between grinds? I'm looking for something that won't break the bank that can roast a pound at a time with varied settings.

Hi Gale, we've had this grinder now for 4 years and gets used 6 times a day everyday. It's begining to struggle to grind and at times it's stalls and clicks. When it starts doing that I increase the course setting and works for a while then starts again. I went from setting 13 up to 20 now and my espresso machine struggles to maintain 9 bars. Is my grinder done?

The one I am speaking about is either the middle or the right one in this video.

I have the smart grinder pro and whilst well featured it does clump at the finer settings, struggles with darker roasts where it doesn't seem able to produce a fine enough grind plus the plastic dosing impeller is non replaceable and wears away fast. Some have worn theirs out within 18 months and no spares are sold for it. I mention these things as I'm not the only one to experience the same. Shame really that they couldn't hace made a decent steel dosing impeller and have spoiled the ship for a halfpenny tin of tar as the saying goes. I will be selling mine on for a used mazzer.

I have had two of those grinders fail and one at six months old. They are totally unrepairable. I have a Baratza Sette now which is far better, repairable and about the same price.
