The long-held argument that the Irish Ogham was the creation of clerics based on material evidence from around the fifth century CE does not take into consideration the earlier continental archaeological and epigraphic data. Arguably, a complex script such as Ogham could not have sprouted ex-nihilo, out of the blue, just for secret encoding? Novel elaborate ideas don’t just prop up for the sake of it. Many have struggled to find the template for this unique system, and many have questioned the validity of certain proposals such as those of R. A. S. Macalister who posited an Alpine origin for these tally marks. Indeed, Rock Art of the Southern Alps, and the Mont Bego and Val Camonica sites, in particular, do compare nicely with much of the graphic symbolism found in the Ogham. However, in my opinion, the template for the Irish Ogham is to be found in the Pyrenean mountains where prehistoric tally marks were merged with the north Iberian scripts. And, this had to be done some time in Antiquity by sophisticated grammarians who mastered the poetic arts of mystical sound reckoning.
