Air contingency battalion, earmarked to go to Panama in view of rumors of unrest (prior training in Okinawa and Korea); departed 6 April for Panama; company situated at NAS Rodman, Panama; posted to tank farm; planning security; Marine Barracks support excellent; freedom of action initially; I/3/r in combat mode while other military was in garrison attitude; Marines hit early morning hours of 11 April; sensors; flora and fauna; press featured Noriega propaganda; increase of intruders; description of skirmish. Quieted after Marines increased fire power; Army General Lefke stops Marines; Capt Valore irate; Lefke directs cease fire; returned to Rodman; Air Force officer who did not participate in skirmish briefs press; intruders professionally trained; ambulances seen evacuating enemy area; maintaining patrols and night vision to protect tank farm; letter/number system for tanks; kudos to I/3/4; lessons learned.
