For screen adaptations of the Yom Kippur War itself, I would recommend the mini-series 'Valley of Tears' which came out a few years ago. Thanks for the review!

A nice movie if you are in your late 60s and want to start smoking!....Just finished it, it is either a brilliant movie that highlights how powerless the prime minister was, or a rubbish movie that missed everything about the personality of Golda Meir, I d opt for the 2nd option.....very disappointing piece of work.

Very slow paced movie. I thought it spent too much time on her and the military advisors and what was the plan and how they reacted etc. Also ok we get it Golda liked cigs but my goodness every shot of her lighting up i thought was ad nausem. But overall im just interested in movies with historical context and thought it was solid.

I think like a lot of other commenters I am outside your demographic. I am old enough (66) that I remember this in real time. I'm not Jewish, but one thing you have to try to understand is for so many of us Moshe Dayan and Golda Mier and others were heros. I really enjoyed the movie but I had to wonder if it was because this history is meaningful to me. I got home from the theater and read the reviews and most seemed to feel obliged to ding the movie for Helen Mirren laboring under excessive prosetthics. I didn't foind that an issue at all and I thought her performance was Oscar worthy. I agree with you that somehow it's not truly great but it's very good.

Yes, please learn more about the Yom Kippur War of 1973. This war almost started World War 3. I don't know if you like to read, but the best book on the subject is called: "THE YOM KIPPUR WAR-The Epic Encounter that Transformed the Middle East" by Abraham Rabinovich. Once u read it, watch the movie again. I promise u, you'll see it in a different light. What you did (as a rough example) was watch the the fourth Star Wars movie (the one with young Anakin) and not watch the first 3 movies. You can't feel her fear until u know what her nation was going through in Oct of 1973 just like u wouldn't appreciate young Anakin's struggles until you've watched the Trilogy. Hope this helps.

Loved the film. Was not surprised how brilliant Dame Helen is, but I was pleasantly surprised by Liev’s effective portrayal of Henry Kissinger. That the director felt able to cut from archive footage of the real life people to the movie’s characters is testament to their performances and make up, hair and wardrobe etc. The movie gives a very strong sense of the loneliness of executive power and the immense stress of conducting a life and death war from the bunker of government. The scene between Golda and Henry with the soul is expertly written and performed, it is the kernel of the movie, it’s all there. Excellent.

Great review man!! All the points you made were great.
I would add, I think the supporting cast (who are all Israeli actors), aren’t quite world class level, which hurt the movie in my opinion (Golda Meir was incredible though).

Also, I’m an Israeli and I appreciate the non-biased review, keep up the good work!!

You knew nothing about the Yom Kippur war? You mean you didn't have an extra 10 minutes to read the Wikipedia entry?

You didn't watch the 20 minute academy award winning film of the Director from 2018 free on you tube?

Please do a little context. It might deepen your reviews.

So I did agree with you on many points.

Like you don't have to see it but it's good

I'm sorry for comparing apples with oranges, but I came back here after watching your Barbie review to say this: Barbie could take a page out of Golda. A movie that is rooted in an extremely politically charged subject plays down the politics and instead makes more emphasis on it being a war movie. But what makes this stand out from other war movies is that the person in charge is female. The fact that Golda is a woman in a man’s world is palpably noticeable in nearly every shot. And enough so for the movie to never feel like it has to spell the obvious out. The character not once makes a sexist crack at the men she is constantly surrounded by (imagine this never happening in a 2023 movie!). This is because the movie has its priorities straight, she and her generals were there to do their job which was to protect their country not to whine about the patriarchy and the lack of female representation in the war rooms.
This is the kind of movie feminists should be hailing as their movie of the year. It could have been Barbie if they had just told the true story about Ruth Handler.

Just watched it as an israeli, its a great movie but i think that it’s missing some context to people who are not israeli or aren’t aware of the war.
The yom kippur war is gut wrenching to israelis, all relatives i have who fought this war cant speak of it and i think the outside horrors are really missing whilst focusing on Meir.
The Yom kippur war and golda herself have a lot more layers that were not explored sadly, it stayed very superficial sadly- just superficial sadness and politics

I watched it, disagree, (not totally, your too nice) thought it was really bad. It communicates war is tough on the leaders, everyone chain smokes, and there are a LOT of slow close ups. It did almost nothing of her personality, historical context, etc. It did adress some to the politics behind the scenes if accurate, but it made Arial Sharon look inept, which is innacurate. Wasted opportunity of great historical moment and actors imho.

Great review! As an Israeli whose parents fought in the Yom Kippur War, I genuinely appreciate your objective perspective, especially coming from someone outside of the region. It's refreshing to see a take on the movie without any leaning towards pro-Israeli or pro-Arab stances. Your fairness shone through, and I found myself nodding in agreement with most of your points. I understand that some nuances might've been missed due to the lack of historical context, but that's more on the movie than you. Oh, and that bit you mentioned about the radio chatter giving you chills? Those are authentic recordings from the war, which is probably why it resonated so deeply. Keep up the great work!

as an Israeli I would definitely watch that movie, it has an added value to us, this war is a milestone in our history, it affected us in so many ways, it shaped our culture, it showed us we are not invincible (like we thought after the six days war in 1967), it changed our collective psyche

A great movie that, at last, honestly portrays the historical fight Israel has been in for her survival since they became a nation again (by a narrow U.N. vote that would never happen in the antisemitic climate of today’s U. N. )Truly of biblical significance. Golda was a lion of a leader, showing more courage in her baby toe than the war “hero” Moshe Dayan who gave over the Temple Mount to Arab control after his forces bravely took it in the 7 day war (a real miracle, that war). I would love to see a movie that depicts the miraculous victory of Israel in 1948 when surrounded on all sides by her enemies and deserted by Britain.

Just saw the film and thought it was some of the worst storytelling I have ever experienced, Don't know how they could botch a story of such a significant woman in history, but they did by not giving any context to her previous history and successes. It was completely one dimensional and was a disservice to Golda.

I loved it. It was a movie about a remarkable woman who helped to put together Israel in 1948, grew up in Ukraine, and moved to the United States. Was she perfect? No, no leader has been perfect, but I would take her today over my leader in this country of the US. She may have been a heavy smoker, and in those days, many people smoked a lot; you would see it in the movies, etc. Some people don't like it because they don't like Israel. I thought it was a good story about a time in history when I was a young teen, and it made us want to read more about it. I believe she was put in that place because God put her there. I liked how they put real clips from that time and showed her how Helen M. was fantastic as always. If I had been the prime minister then, I probably would have taken up smoking. Israel just wants to exist, and since the first four days they became a nation, they have been at war. I have been to Israel several times, and I have served people in the Palestinian areas as well. I love all people. But, our country today only looks at one side and doesn't consider there are two sides. But that is another conversation.

I recommend reading "The lioness" it's about Golda. Really great book if you want to learn about her. Regarding her smoking, she's been a chain smoker her entire life. And very very stubborn. The actress played her so so well, even used her most famous lines. I'm Israeli Canadian, and I will say the movie capture how the war was from Israeli perspective really well. I recommend to watch "the Angle" it's "pre story" to what has happened in this movie. If you recall they had a spy they mentioned in the beginning of the movie. And the Angle is about him (in law of president Assad who became a spy for Israel, to hopefully to help Israel avoid war and protect Egyptians from dying in war against Israel)
