Love your videos man. Would love to learn more from you via these vids. Please keep them coming! (Btw, what species of wood did you use in this vid?)

Love the video. Thanks so much. It's almost my birthday and I asked for Japanese woodworking tools. You're a source of inspiration.

super cool! Beginner woodworker in a small apartment here. Have been learning a lot from the course on your website and wanted to offer my encouragement to keep the videos coming :)

I'm tiptoe-ing into hand tools (mainly western). My question here is, how many iterations of this joint did you try before you got the (very excellent) closed joint you showed?
Also, if you could estimate how many feet/yards/miles of cuts you practiced to "cut the line in half" as you noted.
These are genuinely sincere questions - I don't troll. I'd love to be able to 'stretch a board' like this at some point.

Great work - this is wonderful to learn from! I would love to see more videos focusing on specific techniques, such as how you saw in a downward vector with the piece on the top of the bench (very different from western methods, but very appropriate for Japanese sawing ergonomics), or how you approach keeping your chisels sharp. These are two skills that could use the extra attention.

Beautiful work as always! I have been wanting to give this one a shot but I am always stuck at the same problem that nobody talks about: stock prep. Does Japanese woodworking require the standard jointer+thickness planar that western woodworking needs, or are there some clever workarounds?

Yeah I would say half the battle is learning how to mark accurately. That's been my issue as I've gotten better with every other skill.

Epic woodworking actually showed a chair last night that was built using this joint for the arms. It was a furniture museum so no demo on hope to cut it. You filled that void. This is an amazing joint. Thanks for showing how to make one.

God forbid your parts differ in dimensions a fraction of a mm - this joint will never close.

Awesome video. Had seen videos on the kanawa tsugi, but they are all in Japanese, and the translator software does not translate correctly. Thanks for this video. I hope you will produce more videos on the different Japanese joints. I truly appreciate your videos. Keep up the good work.

Great video! I should give Japanese joinery a try. I was avoiding it because it looks super complex.
Subscribed and looking forward for more videos!

But two things you might consider:
1) Several links in the description are broken
2) That music in the very beginning almost made me close the video - loud high pitched harmonics and screeching violin gave me a hard time. The track in the end of the video worked way better.

Why the 3 marks in the middle of the stick?
Can you please explain?

I am truly impressed by your handsaw technique. Watching the reflection of the off cut on the saw blade reveals an ability to hold the blade consistently perpendicular to the work throughout the stroke that, frankly, awes me. The crank-like pendulum movement of your arm in bringing about that consistency is mesmerizing, and almost seems impossible. Excellent chisel work, too!
