She had to have interacted with a dead squirrel, or something that was already infected with the bubonic plague. Otherwise it’s not possible to pick up such an infection that easily.

My MIL’s older brother died at age 2, before she was born in 1921, from Bubonic Plague. This was in New Orleans around 1919.

The last out break in the USA was Los Angeles in 1924-1925

Black desth isn’t as dangerous as it it back then! Usually it can go away easily in young people, who are healthy! But back then since cure and medicine was scarce there was no cure so it was a true death

All deceases caused by bacterias are curable today because we have antibiotics, but viruses, we still lack a lot, vaccines are not widespread yet

Did she really have multiple buboes? Most people get only one. The medieval Black Death, though, typically showed multiple buboes too.
