John was invited to speak with Shamans Directory members, Tricia (Founder) and Wake about his journey with his Indigenous Xhosa Elders.
There is a spiritual hunger sweeping our planet, to heal from ways of living that are no longer working for us and find our way back to living in balance with the earth. To this end, greater numbers of people are seeking wisdom from “Indigenous” communities. As our interest grows, it is important that we know how to ask for what we are seeking in a way that honors, respects and offers something back to the communities (and individuals) in return for the wisdom and healing that we receive.
In this 2 hour session John offer us a rare glimpse into the world of his shamanic community, and guides us on an exploration, from a South African perspective, addressing cross-cultural global implications, misconceptions and protocols, that we all need to be aware of, in order to begin to build that bridge and craft a courageous new path forward.
Because elephants are the reason that John ended up being raised in South Africa, and you will see that he has chosen elephants as his virtual background, we can not think of a more fitting occasion to apply the phrase, "addressing the elephant in the room," an expression that is used to refer to something that everyone can see, but no one really wants to mention: John is white. In South Africa the population is only 8% white, so it is easy to understand how people might assume that a "healer from South Africa" would be black.
The beauty of the Indigenous or lineage based traditions of the world is that the Elders do the choosing of who will be trained in their traditions, and how they choose is not based on the color of a person's skin, but through dreams, long term unexplained illnesses, birthmarks, chance encounters and other signs that are determined as indications of "the calling" by the Elders themselves.
So yes, John is a white South African man. He is also a fully initiated Sangoma (Healer & Shaman) in both the Xhosa and Swazi lineages from South Africa with over 20 year of experience. This may seem unusual to outsiders, but for his teachers, he is no less a Sangoma than they are. He is no different to them than any other man or woman chosen by the Elders to be trained as a healer and teacher of their traditions.
John includes a slide show of his Sangoma work in South Africa and Botswana.
Sangoma drumming and chanting is performed by John at the end of the interview.
