Motion Magic in Under 5 Minutes: How to Create Custom HUDs

When I'm building titles with the Title preset, I usually delete the Title Background layer when i start, am I missing something important here?

I'm not a Motion pro, but couldn't you just hold Shift instead of Shift+Option to keep proportions when scaling? That's the way I've always done it in other apps anyway.
