Eh, came here to have a listen because I'd never known that they'd recorded it first (but then were to cowardly to release it.) Just as well - This version is clean and simple, and utterly devoid of the power and feeling Edwin Starr put into it. Temptations didn't release the song for a pathetically weak reason, but it turned out to be a good thing because their version just doesn't measure up.

So this is the original, great song, but Edwin Starrs version is obviously better. The 1-2-3-4 bit is not doing much good.

I like this song better for the Temptations than Edwin Starr. I guess it's because it fits the later Temptations signature. Especially Dennis Edwards. But as far as better ? Edwin Star version is genius and HARD DRIVING. RIP to all of them. Time sure flies.

I first heard this original version around late May of 1970. It was during near the school year of a skit held put on the graduating 8th graders.

The following June of that summer Edwin Starr with his breakout passionate and intense runaway #1 hit version.

A portion of the lyrics that lingered and resonated with this 12 year old back then was; "Induction, then destruction...who wants to die?

This is a nice, feel good tune when they do it. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Temptations, but Edwin Starr brought the fire to it. His version is packed with emotion, displeasure, power, the perfect rasp and tone…just overall delivery on record and live.
Now, the only problem I have is that whenever I hear the song I jump straight to visions of Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker in Rush Hour.😂

Edwin Starr's version is great. Doesn't take away the fact the Temps did it first though. The company(motown) decided to give to Starr to record. Every body was happy.

This makes me appreciate Edwin Starr all the more. Same song, but a different presentation -- one that really galvanized the ear. I love The Temptations, but it took Edwin Starr to really raise the rafters with War!
