Loved the 2024 remake and I think it's better in general because of the attention to detail this time, especially the language. However, nobody can beat Yoko Shimada's portrayal as Mariko-Sama. She had something I can't describe that gives her the edge. They left that something out in the remake. It's subtle and 24 Mariko is great but there is that certain extra the original Mariko had. Then again I was 10 when I saw that and a little smitten with her 😘. It could have been that hehe. In the end both version are great.

in the 2024 shogun, blackthorne is an unloyal and stupid character. even the odd friendship of blackthorne and rodrigues is not depicted in the 2024 version

1980 version in my opinion is more refine and sophisticated, the new version feels more like they try to make her look and act to contemporary, I guess to please "modern audiences"

I prefer the original Mariko as played by Yoko Shimada. She had an almost ethereal grace and beauty that was not matched by the newer version. As much as I prefer the production values of the new series, I think the 1980 version is the superior telling of the novel as far too many cuts and liberties were taken by the showrunners of the new series.

What a cheap, artificial and wrong decision to remake such a wonderful film after 40 years.
Mifune is a 24 carat authoritative actor whereas Chamberlain acts like a noble aristocrat.
Yoko Shimada (re)presents the asiatic classical elegance, highly elaborated court manners,
an intelligence sharp as a samurai sword, and pure emotion. The film was really a sensation
during the communist dictatorship in Albania, an eye-opener to ancient Japanese culture.

Shogun 2024 No Chemistry, it's a shame they destroyed James Clavell's Masterpiece. Even he couldn't duplicate it, with his
other Books about Japanese history .I am the proud owner of a First Edition 1975 Shogun

If I remember correctly, The Mariko 1980 version, Yoko Shimada did not speak English fluently. She learned to speak English through a Dialect coach. When I watched the 1980 version of Shogun, I just assumed that she was fluent in English, because she does such a great job. Her acting is amazing to watch.

In the left corner, you have elegance and class. In the right corner, you have a sneering girlboss.... right....

Sidenote : Massive props to Damien Thomas who played Martin Alvito in the original version. He was fantastic in the role.

Shimada shows refinement in movement. Sawai seems stiff and uncomfortable. Shimada shows subtlety and grace in her expressions. Sawai looks flat. Sawai mimics while Shimada embodies.

I prefer the original Shogun given that all the actors portrayed their parts very well, were more memorable in terms of presence and face, and were more faithful to the novel given that James Clavell was involved in this version. I just can't stand the new Blackthorne, sorry but the new Toranaga and Mariko are okay with me (esp. since I like Henry Sanada).

Anna Sawai is the ultimate Mariko-san. She is the character from the book as I always imagined her. Mariko's physical beauty is there. Unbelievably, she only manages to surpass the original Mariko - Yoko Shimada - who, despite being unknown outside Japan, was so good in the role that she won the Golden Globe that year. Anna won the Emmy this year and will win the Golden Globe too.

The recent Blackthorne is more credible. He is clearly fearful of his new environment and hopes, perhaps in desperation, to make allies. Richard Chamberlain was too effete in this role.

I hate Shogun 2024 as I have hated few shows ever before - mostly because it takes a massive steaming shit on the source material.

F-ing idiots, they think by making Mariko a pouty, sulky girlboss they've improved her. The real Mariko ( from the book and 1980) is a goddess, second only to Toranaga in intellect and skill at manipulating people.

They also think that by making Blackthorne a joke they're updating the show. They're disrespecting Clavell's work and the real life man , who was hatamoto, that Blackthorne was based on

I'll be the odd one out and say that I slightly prefer the new version, mainly because of the supporting actors Takehiro Hira, Shinnosuke Abe and particularly Moeka Hoshi and Tadanobu Asano. Moeka Hoshi should have won an Emmy and Golden Globe as well as the Critics Choice award, IMO. It's close between Sanada-san and Mifune-san. The latter has always been my favourite Japanese actor, though, and the 1980 version is far closer to the novel. Shout out for John Rhys Davies, too.

1980 Mariko was gentle, serene, and light hearted but steel underneath.

2024 Mariko is a dour sour puss with a death wish.

One thing that both 1980 and 2024 Mariko missed. In the book Blackthorn made Mariko laugh in nearly every scene they had together. I think that is one of the main reasons she fell in love with him.

You can't even imagine 2024 Mariko laughing with Blackthorn.

1980s Mariko was Statuesque. 5'8 while the modern Mariko is standing a whole 8 inch shorter at 5ft which is cute and petite. The 1980s version is better as she is very outstanding and elegant in her movements, an eye catcher at first glance and everyone can agree with that
