Today, we’ll dive into some of the dumbest moments in Alien Romulus—the moments that not only risk ruining the entire movie but also disrupt the continuity of the franchise because of the implications of these events.

Music: Atlantis by Audionautix https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dciubGRKQA

Overall, I actually enjoyed Alien Romulus, though that might be partly due to the high anticipation I had for it. However, the more I think about certain aspects of the film, the more I realize how some of them undermine Ellen Ripley’s achievements in previous movies. So, here are the five worst moments in Alien Romulus.
The first one occurs in the beginning of the movie: the company recovers the Big Chap, a.k.a. the Xenomorph, from the original Alien—the very one Ripley expelled into space. On one hand, it’s kind of cool to see the first alien revived, but on the other, it completely undermines Ripley’s victory in the original film. Her triumph is diminished because it turns out she didn’t actually kill the alien. There was no need to bring back the Big Chap to justify how they derived the black goo. The narrative could have simply involved receiving David’s research or recovering viable black goo from LV-223 after the Prometheus expedition. Reviving the Big Chap messes with the iconic status of the original Alien and feels like a cheap rewrite. It’s a change that alters the ending of Alien, where Ripley defeated the Xenomorph, only to now be told, “Actually, it wasn’t dead—it cocooned itself and survived.” This twist cheapens Ripley’s moment and opens up unnecessary plot holes in the franchise.

I will never understand the blind praise im hearing for Romulus. Everyone is praising Romulus for exact same issues that they constantly trash Prometheus and Covenant.

The characters are flat and forgettable. The writing for them is nonexistent most of the time. The acting is completely dispassionate... or talentless, however you want to look at it.

The fan service is completely inappropriate for a serious Alien film. Not even Resurrection stooped so low as to directly quote better, better movies in the franchise. As a fan, the "Get away from her you b****" line was completely insulting. How or why would they try to cheapen Ripleys glorious moment in Aliens??

This is how i rank the franchise:

Aliens 10/10
Alien 9.5/10
Prometheus 8/10
Alien Covenant 7/10
Alien Resurrection 6.5/10
AVP 6/10
Alien Romulus 6/10

Alien 3 2/10
AVP: Requiem 1/10

About why the Xenomorph didn't kill Rain, if I remember right, in that scene there are cutaways where the camera shows a facehugger slowly climbing out toward Rain as well. It's a pretty quick cut, but that to me implies the Xeno was holding her there until the facehugger could make its move.

Simply put, Alien Romulus felt like a high-budget fan movie made by a competent film school student, which does a good job overall but doesn't have anything original to say or is capable of writing an interesting original story. The charators of the Romulus was not interesting, to put it lightly. It's like what the recent Star Wars movies and TV shows made by Disney feels like.

there's a few things that i don't understand and it makes my brain go brrrrr. like, when they first arrived and saw big chap hanging corpse... how did it die? it wasnt from a puncture of any kind bc it was hanging from cables and debris, it'd have melted and it would have fallen. how did they killed it yet we don't see any other xenomorph corpse throughout the movie, only big chap?
next question: the ship had freezing temperatures which they elevated, causing the facehuggers to defrozen and come back to life, right at the beginning minutes. now hold that thought. it takes a while for us to find any other xenomorph other than the one spawned from the lady, which happens when they find the hive. alright. got me thinking... the xenos were clearly looking for a way to reproduce, why didn't they have a queen yet? maybe they did? i wonder. but another point is how long it takes for the other xenos to be introduced, why? let's say they were all hibernating in the cold temperatures just like the facehuggers... it has been a while since the temperatures were back up, why didn't they come looking for the humans, instead the humans went inside their lair and found them, just waiting for their visit? i feel like they should have shown up sooner and that's a bit odd.
and why the hell there was an abandoned ship holding cargo that dangerous and precious to the company orbiting a colony (from the company in question) with no explanations? like, let's just place it there and somehow instead of the company it will be a bunch of kids who'll find it first. the hell
another thing, the girl who gestated the chestbuster at first found the xray device, played with it and was seen using it at first. when they came to the point of deciding if she was carrying or not the alien, why couldn't they just use it? i understand if she forgot bc she was freaking out, but another girl saw her using it. like, it could just be resolved in a matter of seconds, no need to lock your buddies outside your ship with a hundred aliens wanting to impregnate them. nooooo way dude!!
the black goo being used as this vehicle which allows them to use it for whatever purpose without properly establishing rules and nerfing it so it'd look more realistic and logical... nah. yes, it was a compound engineered and modified by the company, still, it shouldn't be used as this plot device to allow whatever to happen.
one thing i have to mention is how fast the xenomorph grows, not only it, but also the offspring. it makes no sense compared to the previous movies, really. it bothers me a little bit.
i don't mind the quotes and scenes being inspired or directly copied from other movies from the franchise, it was a nice familiar touch, a bit overused, but i didn't like how the characters were written overall (i know they are young, but the writing looked lazy in their characterization, like the annoying cousin, the romantic interest, etc, even the protagonist herself wasn't exactly a strong female character with a sense of purpose and a clear mind, it seemed she was just surviving by) and these plot holes that i can't seem to find an answer to. anyone? i'd appreciate some help
that being said, i did enjoy the movie and the offspring was my favorite part!

At the moment I am wishing more for an Engineer lore continuation than for a continuation of Alien. I actually liked Romulus. But it's in the nature of things that I gets repetitive from here on out. It's the same creature lurking the same way, breeding the same way, attacking the same way - of course scenes will look similar. But I still don't know what the original engineer home planet looks like, what technological capabilities they have, why they seed life, why they abandoned their creations on planet 4 but left a ship harbor there etc.

1
I think bringing back the first alien was such a nice move and I don’t think at all it nullifies Ellen ripley’s victory on the creature! She survived, that’s her victory! She didn’t have any weapon to kill such creature and she knew! That’s why she tried to shoot them out in the space!
2
I don’t think that Romulus copies scenes from the other films! It’s just Easter eggs and tributes to the original franchise! Romulus it’s actually a really original movie and it doesn’t deserve this negative review just because you wanted something different to be shown.
3
The fact that u didn’t know that the android was not ash but another version of him, upgraded, it’s just silly lol they used to do them all looking the same so it’s perfectly fine to me that a scientific android looked like another scientific android 😅
4
Why is it strange that they managed to create facehuggers without eggs if we saw the same thing done by one android (David) without any equipment in a previous film(at the end he clearly has them without eggs)? I think a whole crew of scientists and a scientific droid could also do that if properly equipped lol
5
You complain on how faster they grow forgetting they they are a lab version and they could have been influenced by it! Maybe they modified that by accident?
6
It is not important to know how they exactly reproduced the black gu since none of the protagonist are scientists and they wouldn’t understand anything! The explanation the android gave it’s enough for us to know what it is. Knowing more on that it’s just useless for the story itself! You want everything explained but it would also take off the fun of thinking and “speculating” on theories!
6
Again, you talk about scenes copied ahahah these are just tributes to the original franchise! I can agree with you just on the weapons and the aim assist lol that’s the only strange thing I noticed.
7
How can ripley copy handy if they actually never met AhahH!! Again, these similarities are just tributes to fans of the franchise! They should help to see the film as part of the same franchise, to recreate the same atmosphere! It is actually really original and a love message to the alien films.

In conclusion, I don’t see any plot holes…I actually see people not happy with anything these days! Just appreciate a good film (and the fact that it performed so well it’s a clear message that it is really good) and stop making up things just to bring it down.
I really love that they managed to create such a good film after all the negative responses they had for the previous ones!

What made the first 3 Alien movies classics is cause it follows the foundation that Ridley Scott had set in the beginning and those are: Mystery, keeping the creature hidden which brings out the fear of the unknown, creating something new that no one has seen before with the main focus was on the Alien and less on characters and environment. That's how you draw in audiences. Alien Romulus is purely and simply recycled trash.

1. Ripley’s accomplishment was not “diminished” sorry but that’s just complaining and finding a reason to hate on something. Ripley didn’t have to KILL the xenomorph to be a badass. She was a survivor because she was quick on her feet and used her brain to shoot big chap out into space. And to assume she killed an alien by shooting it into space is just crazy. I always assumed it survived somehow because it was still in one piece. It could have landed somewhere else in the vast space. cmon now.
2. The scientists were able to print facehuggers without eggs, which was a new concept but you still wanna complain after criticizing the film for “rehashing” and not having any original ideas. You said this undermines the xeno lifecycle? like what?? Okay…it’s still a new concept that works. And David was 1 person that learned how to make eggs. You think Weyland-Yutani can’t use technology to create facehuggers without eggs? Another poor complaint.
3. The chestburster is formed quicker than the other alien movies…Oh look another new concept, but again with the complaining. Maybe WY was able to make more advanced facehuggers with accelerated pregnancies? Not to mention that the facehuggers in romulus are not the same from other movies. They are more advanced and aggressive. Another nothing burger of whining. Next.
4. It’s implied that the xenomorph caught Rain because it wanted the facehugger to capture her. She is smart and a survivor so she is a good potential host. You can clearly see the facehugger appear if you paid attention to the movie.
5. Rook is a robot and the same synthetic as Ash so their vocabulary can be similar. And Bjorn kept calling Andy the B word which is why he finally said it. They could have done without it, but it’s not terrible.

1. I'm fine with it cause i think it adds to the idea that the Alien is the "perfect organism". I always had the headcanon that aliens can survive in the vacuum of space so this wasn't anything weird to me. So i always assumed big chap survived. The movie made it interesting tho by having the alien create a cocoon to hibernate in, which i find cool.

2. Overall i do agree the movie copied too much from previous movies. Ironically me being a fan made the movie a bit worse since it felt like it lacked originality. Everything was too familiar and predictable from the mid-point onwards.

2.a) Imo think the presence of water can be explain in the facehugger scene. Perhaps it was a leak from the cryo tanks or like in A2 maybe the fire alarm was activated which flooded the room

3. That's a good point which i didn't realize until watching your video. The lack of the Ovomorph is strange and even stranger is how quickly they were able to recreate the facehugger when David wasn't able to do so. On the other hand, David was limited since the pathogen didn't react well with the surviving life of the planet 16EG14.

3. a) The black goo being there can be inferred imo. We know the facehugger's "Plagiarus praepotens" basically works like the black goo in the sense it rewrites the host's DNA to create the chestburster. So i don't think it's odd to assume that by harvesting this from the facehuggers they were able to synthesize some very close to the black goo.

4/5. I agree they overdid it with the copied scenes, which goes back to what i said in #2. It lessened the movie for me since it felt like they wanted to fit in all these references any way possible. They could've done Andy's scene with just him saying "get away from her" as any fan would've understood it without him saying a curse word and feeling out of character.

Most of the Audience(Mass) don't want to see study like storyline they just want entertainment like aliens , predator, AVP . so Prometheus and Alien covenant is not liked by masses, for them it feels like A cinematic Documentry, Study . Maybe that's why for Romulus Ridley Scott and his team thought to produce an alien film with some previous shots and elements to make audience feel nostalgic, Lil bit of gun action , shocking and horror elements in last part. Which made it hit ! When someone goes in theatres he/she expects that next 2 hours should make them feel all Human emotions, thrill action, shock, comic relief , so they don't want to watch study history ,biology again in theatres also which they have done in schools and colleges. So there's always more chances that most peoples will like to choose Romulus over Prometheus/ Covenant !

I wanna touch base on two things. First being the face huggers not coming out of the eggs and how David had been unable to achieve that over decades. In the end he put two face hugger embryos not ovomorph embryos in the container, so it is possible that he achieved that. Second, the big chap feels like a nod to the Out of the Shadow book trilogy. In those books during periods in which there are no food sources the aliens essentially enter a hibernation state similar to what is pictured in this movie. I would really like to see that book trilogy come to screen one day. The way it talks about the hive mind and memories being passed down from generations feels like it could make a very intriguing movie.

It's not a bad movie. It doesn't have any deep philosophical questions about the meaning of life. No moody androids playing the flute and talking about their feelings. It's just xenomorphs having a great time and some plucky teens having a terrible one.

My biggest problem with it was that the xenomorph's behavior really changed towards the middle of the film. They start out seemingly intelligent and patient. Then they start acting more like David's creations, charging at anything, and being too stupid to live. The zero gravity scene was fun but a bit unbelievable. The ship turned off the gravity regularly, and the xenos would have been used to it. They would not have just floated around helplessly.

I’ll probably ruffle some feathers, but Romulus has a lot of problems. It’s not a terrible movie, but it does bog itself down. For one, yes it was kinda left unclear for a long time whether the original xenomorph died, but how they brought it back was very flawed. So, it survives being impaled, burned from a propulsion engine, and the vacuum of space, just to be killed by quite mundane means (as shown in a prequel comic)? Okay… The cocoon idea is interesting, but it was poorly utilized. A better idea would have been for the xenomorph to cocoon itself to heal and preserve itself. Once found and awakened, the movie would follow the Weyland-Yutani station and its crew now being the original xenomorph’s new victims. Yes, it would be a rehash of sorts, but it would bring back the alien and allow the implementation of a couple new ideas in a more fulfilling way. Very familiar but good. Secondly, the idea of genetic printing face-huggers. While it sounds plausible, it does undermine the movie Aliens a little in that it makes breeding xenomorphs rather “easy” as all you need is some xenomorph DNA versus the dangerous task of acquiring natural eggs/facehuggers. The idea works better if placed after Aliens as finding xenomorphs is made difficult with the devastation of LV-426. The idea of natural effectiveness versus availability. Finally, paying homage to your previous movies with a line or clue/idea here and there is fine. But if it is overdone, then it more so comes off as unoriginal and baiting for pure nostalgia.
