ACF just got taken over! What should you use?

I could imagine that Matt will integrate some Pro features into SCF in the next step. This would hurt WPEngine even more, because ACF Pro would become superfluous for many.

Wow, that was a nerdy episode… I was just hearing "six-point-eight-point-three-point-six-point Pro six-point-eight-point-three-point-six-point Free… fork it, duplicate it, copy it, don't care what it's called—Secure Fields, Custom Fields, whatever!". Now, picture a newbie trying to navigate this: “Okay, so if I have version six-point-three-point-eight, no, wait, maybe it's six-point-one-point-two... and if I click update, it turns into Secure Custom Fields? And somehow, it’s still ACF but also not quite ACF? And, oh, it will still say ACF on the sidebar but with missing options—unless I summon a secret ritual involving the footer link, version six-point-three-point-eight, and possibly a sacrifice to the WordPress gods”? I swear, at this point, we're basically reading some cursed incantation from a demon-summoning manual. I'm half expecting my WordPress site to grow horns and ask me for a soul in exchange for the Repeater Field. Meanwhile, over two million websites just casually transformed ACF into SCF overnight without anyone even realizing it. It's like waking up and your car’s been replaced by a horse that someone insists is still technically a car because, well, it’s got wheels somewhere, right? Honestly, WordPress updates have gone from "click and relax" to "hope you’ve brushed up on your wizardry.

It's not a takeover, it's a hijack which makes a mockery of the repository system. I would urge all user to stick with the real ACF if, for no other reason, than to show respect and loyalty not just to WPE but also the original Australian developers. If Automaticc were to have forked ACF and released it into the repo as a new SCF plugin then, hey, that's their perogative but, to mislead users by retaining ACF reviews etc. stinks, in my opinion. Nothing short of a Hijack.

Thanks for this -- I updated it yesterday and got SCF -- didn't realise it had actually changed. Just downloaded it, upgraded it and it's back, and working. Not interested in the drama frankly, just don't want the end user to be impacted.

How come the other big players in WP environment, plugins that make more that 400 mil maybe, don't act firmly on this horrible highjack? It's so wrong in all ways. Updating a plugin its almost an automatic action, and if it's a reliable plugin like ACF, you just do it with eyes closed, how could you guess at one point there must be something fishy. Some doy I might update Elementor and actually I might get ElementUM instead ! This is really bad and iit shows how vulnerable we are if a certain Matt guy gets upset.

Are they all out of their minds? Seriously, don’t they have better things to worry about? In the end, it’s us, the users, who are stuck dealing with the fallout. Typical.

If any friends find their website inaccessible due to an update of the original ACF plugin, with the message: ‘The website is undergoing scheduled maintenance,’ please log into the VPS control panel or use SSH to navigate to the website’s root directory and delete the .maintenance file to resolve the issue! To be honest, I’m very disappointed in actions that involve personal grudges or harm the community and developers. Twelve years of reputation ruined in just twelve minutes.

You have a right to your opinion but directing new users to ACF and advising existing free acf users to upgrade from ACF is highly dubious when there is an ongoing feud and the dust is yet to settle.

Also fork the pro version and make it available as open source. Wordpress and it's repository should be free.

to be honest, it's been a long time coming after all the $hit that WP engine is pulling. They deserve this. Wordpress is supposed to be an open source and WP engine shouldnt be doing this

I'm trying to piece together WHY this all happened and who to side with.

when two big cooperations like this fight, users will benefit more from the fight. We've been asking WordPress to implement CMS in the core for a very long time. This here might make it happen. Matt will do whatever it takes to hurt WP Engine.

I don’t know if this has anything to do with wp org but I’ve just tired to upload the ACF file onto my Wordpress plugins and it keeps on being block and a redirect page pops up saying “The link you followed has expired” 😢

I'm with ACF. I will not be using Matt's Stolen Custom Fields.

Not sure if this is related but I came back to update a client's site an hour ago and noted that ACF Widgets is now deprecated and I'm not sure what to do now...Maybe a video covering this? :)

Looks like ACF is back on WordPress!!!! Just now searched at my wp backend to add the plugin, and it's there there first result!!! And I don't see SCF anymore! What's goin on there?!! Is it only me who sees that?🤔
