Crazy take imo. Mega compensates bad stats on previously unusable pokemon. Also can add typing and create new combos with the Mega pokemons often changed ability. On top of of that ya it looks cool >:)

Yeah, you're right. I mostly don't like how it looks tbh. Pokemon becoming big looks really silly. Most moves becoming the same name and getting the same effect. All support moves becoming max guard. The names being silly.

Also, I kinda have a grudge against it because they removed mega evolution and z moves for no reason. Well, I guess there's some overlap with z moves in terms of purpose. But since mega evolutions were basically just new versions of existing pokemon, there's no balance reason why they should be removed.

Dynamax gym battles are more hype than mega evolutions and im tired of pretending they're not.

I don’t like mega evolution, dynamax or anything similar. Why? Because Pokémon, to me, has always been about *permanent power progression*, not temporary power boosts. That’s Digimon’s thing.

The irony that the region basked on UK put in more spectacle to its gimmick than the one based on Spain

My personal ranking of gimmicks: 1. Dynamax, 2. Terastalization, 3. Z-moves, 4. Mega Evolution

Mega was cool and had tons of potential, but it was unbalanced as hell and made only a few Pokemon worth taking. Augmenting stats, typing, and abilities with cool new designs can do so much, but... it was not kept in check at all. Dynamax was out of whack in Singles and made certain Pokemon snowball out of control? That's what Mega felt like all the time.

Z-moves were less broken but felt boring 90% of the time. They were big and flashy, but it was just a really big hit. The coolest effects were on status attacks... which never got cool names or animations. Z-Conversion or Z-Trick were strategically phenomenal. I miss those types of attacks.

Dynamax made every Pokemon and every attack change. I think not making the gimmick only available to 5/10% of Pokemon is a good thing. Variety is good. Even if only half of the Megas were good, that just meant competitive teams are even less varied. Max-moves also felt way better than most Z-moves not just because you could use 3 of them; it wasn't just bigger hits but also stat increases, weather changes, or terrain setting. As was said in the video, it made things like weather and terrain easier to use without committing the whole team to it. Unfortunately it lacked Z-moves best bits by making everything become Max-Guard, and with no change in stats other than HP / typings / abilities, it felt shallow compared to Mega. But overall it was more accessible, it allowed for a ton of customizability in strategy, and the limitation of 3 turns kept it from being way too broken.

Tera is... fine. Defensive tera is great for strategy, while offensive tera does the big hit stuff some people like. I wish terastalization did something more to attacks like dynamax, rather than just giving it +50% damage. Even if it was just for the tera-type attacks, even if it's just for first attack like Tera-stellar does, a single Max-move effects (kinda like how Z-moves were once per battle) would be huge. Imagine if going tera-fire meant your first fire attack set up sun, or if tera-fairy meant your first fairy attack set up terrain. That would make it feel so much more intricate and dynamic (no pun intended).

Anyways yeah, Dyna>Tera>Z>Mega. I wish I liked Mega Evolution. It was cool and had a ton of potential but wasn't handled great. I'm hesitantly optimistic about PLZA reworking it to be more reigned in so it doesn't just repeat gen 6's problems.

Most people who hate Dynamax fall into one of two categories. Those who hate it because it is (arguably) less broken than Megas or Z-Moves, and those who had to deal with Gigantamax Lapras.

I feel like Mega Evolution as a mechanic took it's wrongest turn when they attached themselves super strictly to that rule of "all megas must gain +100 BST exactly relative to their base form." It just felt really arbitrary and restrictive and stopped weaker Pokemon's megas from ever really competing with the stronger ones unless they came in with an especially broken ability change.

On top of which, the stronger megas frequently have a nice little "rich get richer" effect on top of that; since they have more stats to work with to begin with, they're more likely to gain even more meaningful stats by sacrificing something less important to them (i.e. the weaker of their attack stats). It all just feels like some very strange decisions that were always going to come out feeling awkward balance-wise, even if the individual mons are cool on their own merits.

Vibes were certainly a reason why I didn't want to use Dynamax (and the main reason why I refuse to use and kind of hate Terrastralization). Giant pokemon were really immersion breaking for me. I ended up not using it during the story stuff. I only used it in raids and the Battle Tower. I wasn't super excited to use them, and that'd be true even if they didn't get big, because I just didn't like how it took the moves you chose for your mon and just turned them into generic ones. Especially with all status moves being Max-Guard. Even worse was how some added effects were just useless on some mons, like how Max-Darkness lowers Sp. Def when most Dark-types are physical attackers.

I too prefer dynamax over mega-evolution, but I don't think they look stupid. I actually prefer the dynamax designs over the mega-evolution designs and think they're superior lol.

Though the main reason I'm not a big fan of mega-evolution is I'm not a fan of the lore explanation. Apparently it's a super terrible experience to mega evolve, at least for some pokemon, so why would trainers ever want to do that to their pokemon? It feels antithetical to the themes of the games. I know that doesn't really matter in competitive play, but it matters to me emotionally and definitely keeps me from getting particularly attached to the forms.

I think its big that it looks like they might make this game not Switch 2 exclusive. I imagine most people in competitive will indefinitely lease the Switch 2, but for those who would prefer to not do that, we get options.

The reason why people prefer megas on the casual side is we get to see a lot more unique content, new Pokemon designs that come alongside new abilities and stat lines, they also mean more stuff specifically for the Pokemon a lot of people love, z moves were generic (besides a few unique z moves but those kinda get old quick and were exclusive to Alolan and Kanto mons iirc), then d max and g max had the same issue, generic and just adds a few new reskins to mons(no unique stat and ability changes) and some moves that kinda just get old quick.

Finally Tera type is the most generic gimmick and doesn’t really add a whole lot of power to a casual player(u don’t get better stats or better moves, at most a stab bonus)

So for casual fans megas just had the most content and interesting play, whereas Tera is clearly the best thing for competitive as it’s generic enough to not have balancing nightmares like mega ray and the primals did.

is this a bad time to mention I didn't dynamax my pokemon at all during the campain of sword and shield? I just kept forgetting about it untill the gym leader dynamaxed and by then they where down to their last pokemon and it was over, so even in the campain it just showed up at the end (which summarizes sword and shieid).
Also also I am sorry but say that megas where purely offensive is a mistatment and probalby colored by you being a doubles player where defense has a much lower prioriity then it does in singles. You have mon like venu mega, slowbro mega, aggron mega, or aggron mega to a degree just going off of my head. They increase their defensive stats or changed their abilitys. To be honest they where as deffensive or offensive as dynamax. However dynamax was such a snowball potential while atleast megas did help weaker pokemon.
But it was cool to see under the hood and make me like it more.

also also the amount of people who think one form of competitive pokemon is better then the other is insane given that they are equal in complexity they just come from different sources.
singles its in needing to build a 6 mon team to support the whole team for something like a 40-50turn match
in doubles its about building a team of 6 to use 4 to handle your opponent for a 20 turn match

And gigantimaxing is basically why i like mega evolution. Seeing how cool my pokemon became (especially my starters for example), is awesome.

Funnily enough, I played competitive Shoddy (pre-showdown emulator) back in gen 4-5, but only ever played singles and never liked VGC. UNTIL SWSH and Dynamax. Dynamax brought so much strategic depth to the game and made so many unusuable pokemon usable that I got into VGC and haven't bothered with singles since. So yeah, I'm a Dynamax lover myself.
