Since Microsoft is discontinuing support for Windows 10 and not everyone wants to throw away devices that meet their needs, many private users will realize that they don't actually need Windows if the alternatives also work. You can't advertise Linux better. Good job Microsoft.

I'm more excited for Huawei's Harmony OS. They're slowly ditching Microsoft over there in China. I hope they perfect it soon and release it in other countries.

I migrated a couple weeks ago to linux. I settled on Mint and managed to get many of my games running.
I still have minor issues yet to fix, but that’s mainly because my games are running.

Running games designed for windows better than windows while running through a compatibility layer demonstrates how awfully bloated windows is…

It isnt pronounced os. Its O.S. as in Operating System. I've never heard anybody pronounce it like that, ever. Its kinda annoying tbh.

Steam os isn't ready for desktop nor designed for it. We have viable Linux options that already obliterate Windows 11, give them the credit. Caugh caugh Cachy os....And even if you want a nuetered desktop like steam os, there's Bazzite that actually supports desktop hardware.

SteamOS will be a game changer. Linux has come quite far and most Linux systems run very well once they're setup. BazyteOS is probably the closest thing to steamOS for the modern desktop having basically the same features. However SteamOS has some magic under the hood that gives it insanely performance despite talking through Proton translate. Windows biggest problem is they're too busy stealing everyone's data and forcing features no one wants, keeping track of what kind of sick shh you're into 🤮. Meanwhile apple and their customers are too busy smelling their own farts to remember what it's like to get a whiff of fresh air, which they'd probably offer premium, for only an additional $299.95 🙄 which for some reason would still sell because their customers are either rich ir brakndead, or so artsy and smug they won't SHUT UP ABOUT IT 😫. At least I can count on linux to be fair & treat me well when it's not trying to live out it's bdsm fantasies on me 😶‍🌫️, but until gabe showed up it was mostly just a bunch of coders avoiding talking to women. That's why i choose linux, It's nice to feel represented. 🤗

It WON'T run all games, and it's full of bugs, slow downs, etc.

We need something better than libre office on linux. Something more like office or we need a way of compatibly install office on linux. The only reason I have to go back to windows is office

Be careful with confusing Linux with Linux-Based desktop systems.
Be also careful with confusing computers and IT with desktops and laptops. The internet does not just work out of Holy Miracles.

Right now, Linux is THE most used OS on the planet:

Almost all ‘smart’ devices run on Linux. Most smartphones run on Android (Linux!) and practically everything that’s cloud runs on Linux.

Even Azure runs partly on Linux.

Why else do you think that Microsoft implemented WSL?

And there are serious rumours that Microsoft wanted to create something similar to Mac OS X, thus, an UNIX open source base, Darwin OS plus the GUI layer (Cocoa).

We now just need great arm compatibility for Linux

I would like to install this as my main OS, but I cant, at least yet. Because one of the biggest advantages of a pc over a console is that you can do a bunch of other stuff BESIDES gaming, and steam os offers very little in that regard.

Iv been a Linux user for over a decade (fedora & Debian mainly, mint LMDE is absolutely fantastic) For the last couple of years a total migration to Linux has been possible for me, I say for me because it it may not be suitable for all. Gaming on Linux has had a huge shift due to the steam protonDB compatibility layer, before this it would take a huge amount of tweaking in wine to get things to work. Nvidia compat has been better recently too, but I'm an AMD user anyway and have had no problems with my RX6800XT. Since win11 became a Microsoft spyware rootkit, which I paid for the pivalage was the last straw for me. Yes you can cut all that out with the many tools available to customise the ISO, but as a paying customer I simply should not have to do that. I value my privacy and I want my operating system to be resource efficient out tge box and serve the purpose an operating system should, nothing more.

I will take a steam only game OS for a laptop.

Keep in mind, that 4% Linux user base represents a roughly 4x increase in users over the last 3 years since the Steam Deck released...

I have been gaming on Linux for over a decade, fuck windows, valve has done amazing work for all Linux users not just steam deck users.

You don’t need valve’s steamOS for desktop/laptop, install any Linux distro, Arch based preferably of course, then install steam, enable proton for all titles in steam settings and you are pretty much good to go.

AMD GPU makes life easier on Linux, Nvidia is still very good but requires some extra effort to download the proprietary Nvidia driver.

I would prefer s steam os pc if it supports all pc games and services with contract eith windows not to make exclusive content competition a thing but we wll know the path will end up splitting tech eventually

Steam on Linux Mint kinda works out of the box and runs all my "WinDOS" games 🤷
