I have the philosophy of " if you like it buy it" I doesn't matter what it is. Don't just buy what's trending .. buy what you love❤

I agree with Pamela C.'s comment; I just buy what I like; it's just that what I like generally predates WW2. I know that what you're saying is true, most of the younger generation likes what I grew up with (I'm 64 years old), but I'm not interested in what I grew up with, because I grew up with it. I just hope my nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews have enough sentiment to want the things I've saved up. I have got to make the trip up to Nashville and meet you in person. I have the summer off, so I'm gonna start making plans now.

40+ years in the business here (dealer) and insane collector. Most are not building a collection anymore, but buying to decorate with found items. Seems pretty darn difficult to find an interest when you transact only on line and don’t have a ‘candy store’ to see and choose from right before your very eyes. You only know what is out there via the ‘hunt’. You only develop the confidence to collect by talking and listening to others’ experiences and interests. You gotta love history, culture, and preservation. Yes, personal memories start the ball rolling and then it spreads like a wildfire from there. Thanks for raising topics and issues, starting the discussion.

Also some of the younger generation might not like antiques now but who is to say they might be into them later in life after their grandparents pass. Like me for example my grandparents used to drag me to every antique store we saw and I hated it and now I have my own space in an antique shop. 😂😂😂

Mike , I absolutely loved this video . I was under the impression that the younger generation now live in apartments and smaller homes and do not have the room to store antiques . You are right about the smaller families . My dad had 6 brothers and 3 sisters and grew up during the depression . You are right about the Victrola's not selling but the tabletop record players are HOT! As for the LP's or albums it depends on the artist . Sadly Elvis and the Beetles no longer sell but bands from the 70's-90's are selling .

Thank you for sharing your experience. I am one of the ones that thought that as well. I'm 65 and have many, many friends of all ages and only know one young lady in her 20's that love antiques. My adult kids, nieces/nephews and friends adult kids couldn't care less. They want everything new and gray/black or white which is the new "trendy" color. I'm glad for your insight.

I love this point! I think this may happen with every generation. As we grow up, we start to form our own opinions, tastes, & ideas on things & what we like. Our elders already have their own opinions in place on what & how they think. We can all be open to new opinions, but not everyone will be. Part of life, but I do think more people now (including some of our elders) are more open to new ideas, re-purposing, & are impressed by what each new generation comes up with.

The biggest myth in the antiquing world is that you can make a good living reselling antiques. Most of the antique and collectible resellers that I know make so little money that they qualify for food stamps and other govt. types of aid. So, people please keep that in mind when you go to an antique shop and think you can beat down a merchant over the price of their items.

It was the same thing back in 1970. You could get fabulous things for dirt cheap.....for a couple of years. And then all of a sudden, all the baby boomers went mad for antiques and the prices skyrocketed. Everything comes around eventually. Millennials are about to discover how good antique furniture is, and prices are starting to pick up.

As a retired antiques and collectibles dealer of many years, antique will always be anything 100 years old, or older. Anything made before 1999, but less than a hundred years old is considered vintage. I think from what I've seen, younger people are more into collectibles, new or old, and things they grew up with, than actual antiques like furniture, fancy dishes and silverware. I hope younger people learn the value of solid wood furniture before it's all covered with chalk paint 😟

People want what they remember from their childhood. Few remember who Shirley Temple or Howdy Doody are. Right now I see Looney Tune cartoon glass going up in value. We were buying them for around $5 to $8, now we see them $12 to $15 and higher. Star Wars is big. GI Joe. I'm a sucker for things I remember my Mom and Grandma having that reminds me of times I treasured. I'm in my sixties, I know who Howdy Doody is, but he was never part of my childhood. Oh I remember my Grandma having bubble lights on her Christmas tree. Maybe I'll find some for my tree this year.

As a younger collector I see plenty of youthful interest in antiques and I believe that there will be plenty of collectors down the road when younger folks gain more financial security and get more pressing needs in life off their backs like increasing cost of housing, food, and healthcare. With housing costs being such an issue and a trend toward more urban living we might see younger folks trending towards more compact collectables or not collecting 100's of everything like some old-time collectors did in the categories of glassware.

We sell at flea markets and antique shows and we have had a lot of kids that spend a lot of time in our spots looking at almost everything. We have sold a lot of merchandise to kids, especially to the boys. They love the old steel army helmets and uniforms. They love old toys. We've sold hundred year old tools to kids and some of the kids know what they want and what they are looking for. Most of our sales I would say are to people in their 20s to 50s. We sell a lot of items that people have no idea what they are or what they are used for. It is fun to explain it to them. Not everything we have is antique, a lot are vintage. We buy what we like and enjoy them until we sell them.

Mike, I love your 'store' and wish to shop there. I could spend the few days to enjoy seeing the treasure you have. In Toronto we do not have the store like yours. My antiques are all the pieces I bought to have the pleasure seeing their beauty every day. All man made objects are art and it is a true.Cheers to you for acquiring them all for us. Love you channel .

Some of my best customers are the 18-40 group! I am an Ephemera Dealer- 400 years of prints; and Buttons, been a member of National Button Society for 17 years. I have other items as well, but it is the ephemera that they love! They also love anything sustainable! I have been an Antique Dealer since 2001.

I am 48 yrs old and I got into antiques about ten years ago. I fall into a very select few-buyers who consider "antiques" to be items that were made no sooner than 100 years ago. It seems difficult to find these items so I grab them whenever I see them. I have turned my living room and dining room into an old bank/pharmacy/post office from the 1920's. I mostly collect antique flat file sectional cabinets made by Yawman & Erbe, Globe, Walker Shaw, etc. , old paper ephemera, advertising from late 1800's to around the 1930's, old cigar & tobacciana, old medicine bottles, typewriters, adding machines, national cash registers, old banking and office supplies, etc.

As a 36 year old antique lover, this video is so true! At least once or twice a week I am out looking for treasures. I have a 16 year old son who enjoys it was well. There is a booth at our antique mall that has a small section labeled “the weird” it has the strangest or creepiest looking antiques there. It’s my son’s first stop when we go. 🤣 I like collecting things that are old but serve a new purpose. Like the sewing table you highlighted. I also love Pyrex and glass serving dishes. The problem with most other dish ware is it can’t go in the microwave or we are worried it has lead. I do buy dish ware but not in large sets. I use it as wall decor not to eat on. I also enjoy older ceramics that have been repainted in more modern colors. Holland mold nativities etc. Old books are a favorite as well. So much of the modern items we buy feel cheap or as if they won’t stand the test of time. Sturdy made antiques draw the younger generation in. Things that are made better than anything we can buy in the current retail market. Baskets, mirrors, drinking glasses and furniture are examples of this.

Although I have had three sets of ‘good’ dishes from my mom and grandma, I have given them away….but about a year and a half ago I started picking up single vintage dinner plates for our Thanksgiving dinner. My table with nothing that match looks wonderful and we all enjoy it and seeing what plate will determine where each person sits! I have to hand wash them all, but

It's so funny to think young people esp gen z, who are doing a LOT to make thrifting and sustainable living socially acceptable and destigmatized, don't care about antiques. I love vintage and antiques, but I use my things. I am 31 and now I finally have a little extra income so I can afford more now too.

And that's a big thing to remember: younger people have less disposable income than older people. When we want things we will buy them but we're not going to just buy things well beyond our credit limits lmfao.

Thanks for this, it's so important.
