The EFF is at it again. This time, at their Youth Day rally, they’re calling for a universal basic income of R1,500 per month for unemployed young South Africans—a “job-seeking allowance,” they say. Sounds nice, right? Well, in this reaction and breakdown, I explain why it’s nothing more than a vote-buying fantasy that South Africa cannot afford, won’t fix unemployment, and will make the situation even worse.
In this episode of Newsflash, I don’t just react—I unpack the full economic, social, and political delusion behind the EFF’s proposal. Because giving out free money isn’t just expensive—it’s dangerous when you’re already broke.
Let’s be clear: I get that unemployment is a crisis. I understand the desperation. But the EFF’s solution isn’t a solution at all—it’s just short-term dopamine for long-term disaster.
⸻
💸 Why this will never work:
• The South African government is broke.
There’s barely money to fund existing grants. We’ve seen SASSA fail time and again to deliver R350 payments. How on earth are they going to scale up to R1,500 per month for millions?
• The real issue is government policy.
From BEE quotas to job-killing regulations, South Africa’s business environment is hostile. If you want jobs, you don’t hand out cash—you unleash the free market.
• We already have ghost workers and corrupt grant systems.
Adding a new R1,500-a-month scheme? That’s like throwing meat to the hyenas—more looting, more inefficiency, more failure.
• It’s not a “job-seeking allowance.”
It’s a gimmick. It’s a trap. And it’s another way for politicians to buy loyalty using money they don’t have.
⸻
🎓 But wait, what about the youth?
• South Africa’s education system is failing. We don’t have enough skilled workers, so companies hesitate to hire—not because they’re evil, but because they can’t afford to train a workforce that might disappear.
• Many companies are forced to spend millions on training employees just to make them employable in the first place. Multiply that across hundreds of workers? You’d bankrupt even a successful business.
• And let’s be brutally honest:
There’s a growing sense of entitlement. Some people skip work or don’t show up, but still expect to be paid. This isn’t sustainable. Jobs come with responsibilities.
⸻
⚖️ The legal minefield:
• Labour laws favour employees, which scares off employers.
• Race-based hiring policies like BEE and EE quotas exclude some, force tokenism, and reward political connections instead of merit.
• Businesses aren’t hiring because they can’t—not because they won’t.
⸻
🚨 So what should we really be focusing on?
• Fixing the education system so people leave school with actual skills.
• Cutting fuel taxes so goods and transport aren’t so expensive.
• Fighting crime so businesses can operate without private armies.
• And most importantly: getting the state out of the way.
⸻
🧠 Let’s do a little thought experiment:
If South Africa were truly committed to ending unemployment, the first step wouldn’t be a handout. It would be a policy overhaul that opens doors for entrepreneurship, reduces red tape, and makes it easier—not harder—to hire people.
The EFF’s idea of handing out money won’t fix anything. In fact, it’ll just create more dependence, more corruption, and more anger when the money eventually runs out (which it will).
This is why we must push back against pipe dream populism. Not because we’re heartless, but because we want real, lasting solutions—not slogans.
