I won't tell you how his story actually plays out but it's definitely not like what you just watched.

Jonathan Hyde does a good job here, once again. At least in my opinion. But, he's an excellent actor anyway. Though his version of the Master wouldn't scare even a fly. He looks too kind. Sorry.
And Palmer (the character) does do a stupid thing in blurting out his information when he should have kept his mouth shut. I guess the saying "pride goeth before a fall" applies here too.
Master is smarter in himself, having lived a very long time and accumulated a lot of knowledge during that time. But since he is clearly also a serial killer in his mind, he also makes the same mistake as all serial killers before him, i.e. he falls into his own pride and underestimates at the end (season 4) the ability of people to love. To how far people are willing to go to save their loved ones. :)
