(5 Feb 2015) The United States will continue to support diplomatic negotiations to bring the "conflict in Ukraine to an end", White House spokesman Josh Earnest said on Thursday.
Speaking to journalists in Washington, DC, Earnest said President Barack Obama's administration was "encouraging and supportive of ongoing efforts" to find a peaceful resolution to fighting between Ukrainian government troops and pro-Russia separatists.
He also said the "Russians and the separatists that they back in eastern Ukraine didn't live up to" commitments made in the Minsk agreement, including the withdrawal of troops and weapons from eastern Ukraine.
Earnest's comments came as US Secretary of State John Kerry visited Kiev on Thursday and called for a commitment from all sides involved in the conflict to reach a ceasefire.
Kerry urged Russia to show its commitment to a peaceful, diplomatic solution to the fighting by ceasing its military support for the separatists and bringing them to the negotiation table.
Russia vehemently denies that it is providing equipment or troops for the separatists but Kerry sharply rejected that denial.
More than 5,300 people have been killed since the fighting started in April.
