Are Stegobium paniceum Beetles Afraid of the Smell of Garlic? Watch it in this video = Biologist, entomologist, Dr Viktor Nikolaevich Fursov shows the reaction of Stegobium paniceum, or Bread beetles, to the smell garlic juice from crashed garlic bulbs.

Beetle Beetle, or Drugstore Beetle, or Biscuit Beetle, Stegobium paniceum, Will Eat All Your Stocks in the Kitchen! = Who is a bread beetle, or drugstore beetle? The bread beetle (in Latin, Stegobium paniceum) is a widespread species from the family of biscuit beetles (Coleoptera, Anobiidae).
The bread beetle is widely known as a dangerous pest of various dry products of animal and plant origin (food, tobacco stocks and products from them, pharmaceutical medicinal herbs). Both the larva and the imago are harmful. Despite the fact that the beetle does not feed, it causes significant damage to the food, making many emergence holes in them.

Most often beetles damage stocks of dried products: rusks, drying, dry bread, biscuits, rusks, baked goods, pasta, crushed grain products and compound feed, dried fruits, medicinal raw materials and herbal teas (up to 50 types of dried medicinal plants and preparations from them), dry food for animals, book bindings, herbariums and seed collections, even insect collections. Beetles damage food even with a moisture content of less than 6%.

The bread beetle is the most malicious pest of herbaria and other biological collections, including entomological ones.
Especially noticeable harm it caused by the nutrition of the older larvae. Adult beetles do not feed and live off fat stores accumulated during the larval stage.
The female lays 60-80 eggs in the future food for the larvae. The egg stage lasts about 1-2 weeks.

The larval stage lasts from 4 to 20 weeks. The larvae penetrate the covers of the nutrient substrate and make passages in it. During development, the larva molts 4-5 times. Pupation takes 12-18 days. The lifespan of an adult female is 13-65 days.

The full life cycle can last from 70 to 200 days, depending on temperature and food quality. The course of the life cycle mainly depends on the ambient temperature. Development starts from 15 ° C to 34 ° C, although the optimum point is 30 ° C with 60-90% relative humidity.
