My onkyo HT-390 once worked with all the 5 attached boxes. But now only works with three of them. I'm not technical at all so have no clue what to change. Also, since using the sound system on my TV, steaming services like prime video and Netflix movies with dolby 5.1 don't work... So really no use of using the system. Which is just a waste... Can't find anywhere why this is an issue and if it can be resolved

Thanks for this video.
I have the same problem with my Onkyo TX-NR609. No sound and the speakers were not displayed on the front. I did the fix as you outlined and it started working again. I was very happy to not have to buy a new receiver.
However when I put the case back on and put the receiver back on the shelf the problem has reappeared. I tried the same fix again, this time making it a bit hotter and pushing down on the chip until it cooled. It did not work this time though.
The problem does seem to be the connectors on the DTS chip, as it worked initally, but maybe mine to too far gone.
Do you have any other suggestions?

To anyone who does this, take care of heating up the electrolytic caps nearby. They like to pop when they get too warm. Love seeing these simple fixes, have fixed loads of devices this way in the past. Good job!

Interesting, is the heat application really responsible for the sound miraculously reappearing, or is it the power reset. After all the power is drained and then everything works. Other electronics do the same when a hard reset is implemented. Food for thought.

I can verify this works, and works repeatedly. I mention "repeatedly" because this solution is only temporarily. The unit will work for about a year after heating the chip. The first sign you'll have to repeat the procedure is you'll get no sound when you turn it on, but if you turn it off and then on again immediately it will work. As the problem gets worse, you'll have to leave the unit on for several minutes to warm up before restarting it works. Later it will take multiple restarts. Obviously it's a thermal problem related to that chip - the permanent solution would be to replace the chip or the entire HDMI board. That may not be possible or cost-effective now that this model is so old. And if you do replace the parts, how can you be sure you're getting a chip/board where the problem has been permanently resolved instead of someone just doing this temporary fix anyway? So this is a good way to get a few more years out of this unit.

Soo worth it buying a heatgun instead of turning it in for repairs.

So it worked on my Onkyo TX-NR808. I was pumped. I heated to 160F according to IR thermometer. The speakers showed up, it played for about 5 minutes but then music died. Speaker still show on display. I turn off and on and speakers don't show up.

I retried, speakers show up and play, and it seems to work until temperature comes down to 120. Speakers show available but no sound. Then off and on and speakers don't show up on display.

Any further tips?

The main problem with these DTS chips is that lead free solder is used and the solder connections go dry jointed under the chip....these chips tend to run very hot with no heat sinking and the build up of dust over time makes them even hotter....i had a sound problem with my Onkyo tx nr 607 but mine was dry jointed solder on two of the power transistors.. By heating up the DTS chip with the hot gun i believe is a short term solution and will fail at some time....the best way is to resolder ball the DTS chip which i know will not be cheap and is very hard to do at home unless you know what your doing.

This worked perfect. I heated the chip up for 30-45 seconds with my heart gun set to 725 then used a carpenters pencil to lightly press down while it cooled off for roughly a minute and everything fired right up. This worked perfect, thank you!

This trick usually works only temporarily and briefly, often only until you use the AV next time. If you are not getting any sound from the AV then even a quick blast with a heat gun on the DSP chip will make it work for a short period, but alas it is not a permanent fix.
