I've seen many Brazilian and international shows and concerts. Internationally, I've seen shows by Madonna, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Elton John. Nationally, I've seen many more shows, but I've seen Ana Carolina, Seu Jorge, Caetano Veloso, Milton Nascimento, Skank, etc. and I can tell you that no artist has the same mesmerizing stage control as Maria Bethânia, the best artist I've ever seen on stage!

Poetry was a staple of Brazilian music, though sadly not as preponderant anymore. So here's an 80's poet of Brazilian rock that was lost way too young: Renato Russo (there's a movie about his early career, btw). His group, Legião Urbana, produced multiple hits in the 80s with lyrics so rich it set them apart from everyone else. But play Quase Sem Querer, Tempo Perdido, Ainda É Cedo, Eduardo E Mônica or Será and anyone of my generation will find themselves singing along. Their masterpiece, and most popular song, Faroeste Caboclo, runs for almost 10 minutes. It was turned into a movie about a decade ago. Not my favorite song, though, because it's a tragic story brought so close to life that it turns my stomach, but it would be the one attracting most viewers, I believe.

You should listen to a great singer and composer who is also Brazilian, called Ney Matogrosso. He is very well-known and at 83 years old he still has the same voice he had when he was released about 50 years ago. Listen to the song "Balada do Louco" and see for yourself.
