From IHCSCV's Family Resource Center Team:
This week’s Wellness Wednesday challenge features a traditional food called Pinole, shared from our Job Developer/Coordinator, Miriam Mosqueda!
A message from Miriam:
“Pinole is made from maiz (corn) that is toasted then ground to make a powder like food. It is eaten as a snack as is or mixed with water to make drinks like Atole and Tejuino. My family eats this as a snack, sometimes sweetened with piloncillo. Traditionally the maiz is toasted over an open fire and ground with a metate. Here we use stovetop and blender, a representation of traditional foods made in our current contexts.
We are using two types of maiz - Blue corn and Glass Gem Corn, both grown in our backyard.
Step 1: Take the kernels off the cob of the maiz you are using.
Step 2: Toast the kernels in a pot on a stovetop or open fire.
Step 3: Grind the kernels into a powder in a food processor, blender, or metate.
Step 4: Ready to eat!”
