Not scary. It's ominous. A new realm that we were never supposed to visit, no life, perhaps nothing from our universe as we know it can exist here without protection. The sounds you hear is your brain reacting at the molecular level to this place, where we simply shouldn't be. It feels, as it sounds, yet we move forward to explore more of this "other side", the result of tearing the fabric of space-time in our attempt to fold it.

In 1st edition AD&D's Deities and Demigods cyclopedia, Azathoth is arguably the most powerful deity. Azathoth is virtually unkillable and nearly unassailable. Any that try to approach go insane. Azathoth makes Zeus, Odin, Ra, Omikami, Marduk, and Shang-ti, all heads of pantheons, look like insignificant worms. Even those ruler gods combined and cooperating would be destroyed if they even tried to come within light years of Azathoth. All while Azathoth slumbers and dreams.
Now keep in mind that all this is the AD&D game system's view and description. This is not Azathoth, the Gospel according to Lovecraft.
There are only two entities in the Deities and Demigods that can even affect Azathoth. The first is Kuan (Quan) Yin, the Chinese goddess of mercy and child bearing. While she has no attack of her own, she cannot be attacked by any power in the universe. No entity can even imagine or think about doing her harm. So while Kuan Yin can't hurt Azathoth, Azathoth can't hurt her.
The last entity is even more ambiguous. It is the god-sword, Stormbringer. It is difficult to gauge how two such strange and omnipotent entities would match up. But Stormbringer (and her myriad sister swords) would at least be able to affect Azathoth which is more than any other being in universe.
There is one more entity that I must mention that was in a Dragon Magazine issue but not in the books proper. That is Satan Lucifer. Satan is very powerful in AD&D game terms. Azathoth and Satan may overall be somewhat equal. It would be an weird battle either way and definitely hard to referee using the game mechanics only.
I love adding Lovecraftian elements and flavor to my AD&D campaigns. It adds a dash of suspense and lunacy that my players seem to really enjoy.
