"An individual's histories and complexities lie unseen beneath their visible skin and bone surface. Our minds shift between various physical, virtual and emotional realities. What is truly 'real' at any given moment? This fascination with the human condition is why my work is figurative and why the boundaries around the figures are broken, blurred or abstracted. By contrasting realism and abstraction, I believe I can best portray the layered and complex world around me. The play between calculated planning, experience and the thrill of spontaneous or accidental experiments intrigues me." - Anna-Carien Goosen

The StateoftheART Gallery Award aims to unearth undiscovered talent from around South Africa and provide a platform for artists to gain industry recognition and boost their career. 10 artists whose work shows originality, a strong signature in a South African context, and technical skill were selected as finalists and their work will be on show in a special exhibition at StateoftheART Gallery from 06 – 22nd September 2018 for the final round of judging. The winner will be awarded a R10 000 cash prize and a solo exhibition in 2019.
