I'm here because of his recent tweet about the "Neon Nazis" tweet and found the dictionary definition of "Pathological Altruism".

Brilliant talk. I came here from the RPS article you wrote. I'm saddened to read some of the comments here, but I'm hoping people will reconsider how to tackle extremism, not through vitriol and hatred at your supposed "enemy" but by talking to them.

Dan, you are an absolute credit to yourself, your brother, the great City of Manchester and indeed this country. To respond to the horrific murder of your own brother with such objectivity, ration and such a dignified, maintained commitment to humanity is quite remarkable. You give all of us who fight against racism and bigotry, immense inspiration and energy. More than all of the things I have mentioned, you are ultimately a shining credit to the entire human race.

Thank you Dan for your powerful thoughts which stand as a tribute to your brothers memory. I grew up in N.Y. near the World Trade Center. My home and people were violated, and I must admit that my first reaction to that event was visceral.
I wanted revenge. I still struggle with that.
In all honesty, I would be suspicious of anyone who says that they are incapable of an extreme opinion or action. It occurs so often in our societies, that it should not be seen as something other people are doing, but rather what we ourselves are capable of. The necessary first step down the path of extremism is justification for our behavior. I would also say that this justification is often spread through a narrative that does not and will not entertain respect and tolerance for another's opinion.
When people are silenced, when their hopes are dashed, when their suffering is ignored, there is fertile ground for extremism of every kind, and they become susceptible to extremism. One could fill the page here with examples throughout our history.
So if we are going to have this conversation with our young people, lets start there. Lets own it.

Still blows my mind how you've managed to take something so terrible in such a positive, thoughtful direction. The term gets thrown around a lot but it's a genuine inspiration. Thanks Dan :)
