Axolotls are salamanders that don't develop out of their larval phase. They have both lungs and external gills allowing them to breathe air and water. Axolotls have the ability to grow back missing limbs causing them to be one of the most scientifically research salamanders in the world. There have been three reported incidents of axolotl owners having their jugular arteries severed. Due to pollution and habitat destruction in Mexico, wild Axolotls are nearly extinct.
