One thing about post-mortem photography in the current age as we look back at them.

A lot of old Victorian photos are often mistaken for PM photos simply for looking...weird. A lot end up being babies who ARE just sleeping due to how long it would take to set things up, photos of mothers with sheets over them to hide them while holding onto said babies for comfort, or people using tools to help them keep steady poses because, again, the long process of setting up the photo. One rule of thumb I found from Atlas Obscura is that just pay attention to the details. If a person is clear and healthy looking, eyes open, standing...they're alive. It's not posing, they are alive. And as I mentioned babies before, unless specifically stated it's better to assume they're alive but just asleep because the photographer is taking their sweet ass time with that damn photo.
